I'm an experienced SCUBA Diver and now want to try my hand at, and enjoy what Freediving has to offer.

My question is, I am thinking of changing my dive watch to a Suunto DX, but cannot establish our to their bad online information whether it has an APNEA setting or a system which favours what Freedivers need to record.

Any knowledge on the DX?
Any other suggestions for dual use computer that is wearable out of water?

And while I have your attention, AIDA or PADI for a Freediving course?

Hi Trojan Diver, its nice to meet you!
Can't help you much with the Suunto DX. I personally use a Mares Smart Apnea, which is just for freediving only. Its a really easy to use one.
I don't do much scuba diving, so I dont have a dual function watch. When I was researching on buying a dive computer, the Suunto Zoop popped up, the functions look good, but its physically massive.

I went through AIDA, which I like because their schools specifically teach freediving only and they look after the freediving competitions around the world.
Its just me and not putting down the skills and knowledge of PADI or SSI, but they are traditionally scuba and now they are branching into the freediving market, whilst AIDA specialises in it and has always been about freediving

Try the Suunto d4f. Its designed for freedivers.

I have used Suunto D4i now for two years. I had two straps broken! This is quite expensive to replace. After some searching on Internet this seems a long time problem with D4 / D4i / D6 / D6i and even D9. Also the steel straps do have polymere inside and on the watch connection end. Suunto does not do anyting about it. When I want to replace the battery myself I foud out there is a plastic battery adapter inside the watch that makes the standard CR2450 and even CR2450N battery not fit well. Many other watches do permit you to change battery yourself.
I am happy with the watch functionality for freediving, spearfishing and scuba dive computer, but the breaking straps is a headache. So I will switch now to Cressi Drake.
