On Thursday 27th September 2007 the AIDA board announced that the recent Constant No Fins World Record dive of 83 meters was invalid. This record attempt was dogged by intense debate due to the fact that onsite judges failed to enforce the rule...

This is not good.

I mean, it is ok, if they decide that the dive is not valid record (though it is a pity). It is ok, if they decide that the dive is valid (and we are happy).

But first declaring it is ok, and then changing the decision - it is not a good practice, I think.
 
Major Bummer for Martin.
Also a bad skirmish for AIDA. However - it is much better that they be consistent about the rules. The best they can probably do here is scramble , take responsibility and get on with it. It is a major bummer than Martin has to get caught up in AIDA's screw up, but it is better that they enforce the rules across the board - even if retroactively. From an institutional perspective it is the only correct decision. I also agree that diver's should have to bring up a tag. As I said elsewhere - Martin's record would have the 'no tag' shadow over it for as long as it stood. Fair or not - that's the way it is.

AIDA is a budding organization - there are bound to be problems. I'm sure we'll all get over it.
 
Now I see, there is a "little" discussion about it, and reading through it, it looks a good decision, though it would have been better to have this decision earlier.

And I think Martin will do an even better CNF dive with using tag.
 
Anyone hear whether Martin will get a really deep discount on a future attempt? He should, starting with free judging!
