Re: [News] Diver dies in tall waves off Monastery Beach Carmel: Two others escape oce

This is very sad, but I have been told by the park rangers in the area that at least 5 people per year die at that beach (not all divers, sudden waves pull in people walking on the shore.)

It has some beautiful diving, but please stick to the rocks on the left (West) hand side! There is a branch of the Monterey trench that comes in very close to the beach and it brings with it interesting life, but makes for a sudden and unpredictable waves, with extremely strong under-tow that can take you down 60 feet in a matter of seconds.

I have friends that have nearly lost their lives to this site (thankfully they were saved)

Instead get your reservation for nearby Point Lobos or dive Otter Cove or some other shore location.

Just would recommend that you be very careful about this site and understand that it changes very quickly!
