According to a press release on Herbert Nitsch's website, he is heading off to Santorini to attempt new depths in the freediving category of No-Limits. Herbert Nitsch holds 32 world records in freediving and has freedived deeper than any other human on on...

Good luck Herbert!

Save dives!

Love, Courage and Water,

Kars

Wow wow and wow again! He's just gonna jump up 30m per attempt! That's some hardcore diving. 300m max attempt planned as well (from the current 214 record). I'll definitely be following this!

Wow, what a photo.
In a way it looks like one of those art projects, only a title is missing, oh I know one:
The Herbinite Insertion.

What happened to the previous streamline cocoon?

Any word on what equalization method he's using?

If it's the eqex again, i found something strange on that. Marcus Greatwood claims this on his wiki-page:

"Marcus designed and built the EqEx (Equalisation Extension tool) that allowed Herbert to equalise his ears deeper than 200m."

[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_Greatwood"]Marcus Greatwood - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

This is the same guy to claim he's invented the mouthfill (http://forums.deeperblue.com/freedi...s/90774-very-deep-dives-without-mouthfil.html), so i'm having some doubts about this claim. Plus the eqex is basically a coca-cola bottle, the design of which is now almost 100 years old (Coca-Cola - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). Did he design the eqex before he was born?

Or has Herbert switched to wet equalization? That sled looks like it's very fast, maybe too fast even with an eqex for traditional air eq.

Reactions: apneaboy
No idea what he Herbert plans on using Daan and I know almost nothing about wet equalisation but can it be used from the surface?

For some reason I was under the impression that it's used deeper than a certain depth - if that's the case he'll have to use some other aid anyway to get there which begs the question of why use wet EQ at all if he has a way of getting through the biggest pressure gradient at that speed anyway.

Another solution I guess would have some way of going slower at the beginning of the dive where pressure gradient is the greatest and speed doesnt matter much for DCS and then speed up as he gets deeper to avoid DCS (and at those depths EQ will be much easier since pressure gradient is so small).

On the video of Herbert's No Limits world record I think he stops using the bottle on the way down so must have reverted to some other form of equalisation. Can someone clarify that?

check out 2'45min waddaya reckon?

Good luck on the new record

Let me watch the video but from what I remember Steve there was a stop around 20-30m to fill in the EQEX with air but he only used it to equalise after 100m...

Hmmm hard to tell when that is because that video is edited :-( I can find out exactly how it works if you are interested but I'm guessing that you could use the air in the bottle to take a really deep mouthfill and continue equalising using mouthfill from there on or you could just keep topping it up until you get all the from the bottle into the mouth...

Dive profile for anyone interested (you can see the EQEX filling stop):

I wonder who created the Wikipedia entry for Marcus? rofl Seriously? I would love to know whether this is how Herbert remembers it.

Ok simos. Go and watch the video then .

Does anyone actually know for sure though?

Sorry saw this after I posted Steve of course i wasn't there so don't know for sure. What I was hoping to get from the video is the time into the dive he ditches the EQEX (and work out the depth from the dive profile to see if he could just ride his ears from there on) but you cant see that.

Just some more speculation until someone replies who knows for sure but even if he managed to get a full equalisation in around 160m-170m he could have still been able to ride his ears for at least 40 odd metres at that depth.

Would be really curious to find out if there is a plan to ride his ears in this new WR attempt.

Haven't done the maths but on top of my head for 300m you should be able to not equalise for at least a good 80m or so - what do you guys think?

The video is just a mix of training dives together with the staged dive Herbert did after the attepmt for the media. So I wouln't rely on any depth or time references from it.

BTW, there is also a video with the test of the new sled, and many more photos on Herb's facebook page

Looks like he plans to get out of there fast Interesting concept

Yes, I was surprised too, that it looks like he abandonned the idea to quit the sled at a moderated depth ascending slowly while decompressing, like he did at the 214m dive.

Are you basing this on the fact that he didn't get out on that test dive or did he say he won't ascend slowly Trux?

That looks like a relatively 'shallow' dive (based on total time taken) and obviously really fast so I'm guessing there was no need for a slow ascend? Still you'd think that if they were planning a slow ascend they'd be testin that too...

Excuse me, but doesn't Herbert abandon the sled and descend slowly the last stretch? Isn't he the freediver coming into frame about 1:00 in, after the sled has surfaced?

Watching it more closely, you are probably right Chris - at first I though it was a safety diver. He seems to be out of the sled fairly deep actually - also the video looks edited and parts 'cut' (eg when that diver appears and then there a surface shot) so don't think we can use time etc reliably.

To what depth do you reckon is this dive?
