I hope he is allright and wish him a fast recovery...

Does anybody know what happened?

I'm sad and worried -- I hope he recovers soon.

I'm not sure what happened -- perhaps they had to activate the counterbalance system (which would explain the 5 minute dive time). The reason is all speculation -- perhaps narcosis or failure of the lift bag?

Then, with so much time down there, and no deco stop, he may have suffered DCS, hence the hyperbaric chamber.

His dive was 182m in just over 5 min... new pb.

There was nothing wrong with the dive... Carlos like to have long dives.
But I guess this new deept for him, 182m, in combination with long time is not the best mix.
Carlos will soon dive again, but hopefully A LOT faster from -50 down to 183+ and back to -50.
He is using a special vest that don't have room for so much air, just to be slow. (maybe to slow this time tho)

Herbert 183m was done in 3:15... and he was very ok after the dive.
..and you find Herberts 183m dive profile right here under... :t

If Carlos enjoys loooong dives, perhaps he should do deco stops at 20m, 10m and 5m! I'm sure it would help.

Hope he recovers quickly.

Must be a little unnerving to be a safety freediver on such a long dive! :duh

Guys,

According to the information provided by Gabriela (Carlos girlfriend and manger)He is now in the Sharm Medical Center of Sharm el Sheik, Egypt.

He was exposed to a long dive of more than 5 minutes where he suffered a strong discoordination at more than 100 meters for a extended period of time.

The doctor in charge of the firts evaluation told that Carlos might have some injuries in the right side of his brain, and could cause several damages to the movements in the left side of his body.

The Doctor also recommended to move Carlos to the German city of Murnau where the best doctors in the discipline will treat him.

It is too soon to have an idea of the final diagnosis but they will be doing some MRI's and other tests trying to find his actual status.

Carlos I wish that you have a fast and total recovery.

Suerte mi pana

Carlos dives:
08 sep - 165m in 4'40"
10 sep - 171m in 4'25"
12 sep - 182m in 5'02"

182m, 2min exact for the way down, 3'02 min to come up.
At 120m, way down, he stop to take of his noseclip.
At 2.20 he was at 174m on the way up.
And total 2'51" below 100m.

Sorry to say this, but this sounds very bad.

Carlos - be strong!

I hope he has some kind of insurance. A DAN insurance covers freediving, but maybe not record attempts.

How is he doing - anyone knows more?

Sebastian

Oh, oh, oh that does not sound good. Though, I wonder by what the LMC was caused - seeing his previous times, it looks like losing motoric control in depth below 100m due to hypoxia does not look too probable. DCS at this depth seem strange too, especially at such a slow ascent (though I can still imagine that it could happen if some conditions are met. The descent was slow finally too, and that may be the culprit - longer than usual exposure to the pressure, and also at previous dives). Was it perhaps narcosis or something else? Was Carlos in perfect health before this dive? Didn't he do more deep dives that day?

Carlos, we wish you quick 100% recovery!!! Crossing my thumbs that you are back in few days without any consequences at all!

One can only speculate (which is more or less pointless), but narcosis at those depths, for that long...It would be severe. And who knows what else happens to the body? There are extreme bloodpressures and things that could cause all kinds of trouble. 3 minutes under -100m? I don't think that's been done before - the thing is, we simply would not know what happens.

But most important - I hope Carlos get's well. This is horrible :(

hi,
i was Carlos safety diver for all his no limits dives, except his last one. Lotta was there instead.
All his dives have been much longer than he hoped. part of the problem is that after 100+ he slows down his descent quite a lot. he's usually very narked, so i can imagine he's quite slow in inflating his jacket and putting back his noseclip. when i hold the rope during his dives, i can feel when he stops for the last time, but then there's quite some time elapsing before i feel the vibration of the lanyard moving against the rope again.
in his deepest dives he always comes up saying what a beautiful dream he had.
other problem is that the lift bag of his jacket is too small and it takes a long time to pull him up, especially when he's at depth and very negative. and because he has the thing on his back, he cannot let go of it during the last part of the ascent in order to slow down in the last crucial meters.
for the rest his dive planning was good: one dive every second day, and very very shallow warm-ups.
he goes down to 6 mt after every dive to breathe pure o2 for 10 min.
after his dive to 171 he felt a little numbness in his fingers, so he breathed more o2 for 10min, and drank some rehidration stuff and symptoms were gone immediately.

he's flying to germany soon to have a brain scan.

hope he will recover very soon.

Linda, one thing I was always curious about...

Why does he put the noseclip back at the bottom? I never understood the meaning of that...

Sounds like he is in good hands...

All the best to him and anyone else involved!
