that the average handspan is around 8 3/4 inches, or about 21cm, which is useful for measuring the approx. size of some flatfish such as sole, before spearing them, in case they are close to the legal minimum ( although we prefer to be well above this wherever possible).
However, it is also said to be the average distance between a person's nipples ( of either sex) which, whether true or not, can be a good conversation point at parties.
I wondered what the general consensus is - a poll would provide useful scientific data, although I'm not familiar with posting them.
