I don't post over here on DeeperBlue but I do like to read about the spearfishing that many write about. My name is Johnoly, I'm not a troll and and I'll answer every question asked of me.

I mainly post over on Spearboard.com and in the East Coast section since I dive Jupiter Florida. I'm not a freedive spearo but mostly scuba spearfish.

I've been asked to write one side of a 'point/counter point' article by a major nationwide magazine, Scuba Diving magazine. You can find this magazine at any major bookstore. They focus on the recreational scuba diver but are expanding their articles to include some spearfishing which is great and this would be a great way to promote freediving also.

In their point/counter point section they try to have 2 authors write their views for and against a particular topic. In this case the topic is " Should Spearfishing be allowed on Scuba?" In essence is scuba easier or worse than freedive spearing and does Scuba have an unfair advantage over freediving. When I was approached to write the article, I thought of the divers on Deeper Blue since you are passionate supporters of freedive spearing. I've read all the sides of the debate for the last 7 year's I've been a member of spearboard. I only scuba while spearing but I think with the bubbles we blow, it still spooks the fish as they run.

I think to the recreational reader of the magazine, we could offer both sides of the issue, but in the end get more recreational people to take up the sport of spearfishing whether by tank or by breath hold.

Like I said, this is a national magazine and the publishers are worldwide with over 50 magazine titles on everything outdoors. Their website is:
BONNIER CORPORATION

The magazine's website is
ScubaDiving.com | Scuba Diving Magazine

Being published in a national magazine has some credit that very few can claim. I was just looking for someone who is just as passionate about freediving as I am about scuba, and would present a great version of why freedive spearing is better than Scuba spearing.

Let me know if you are interested and I'll pass along your information to the editor, David Espinosa.

My email is thcjohn100@yahoo.com

Again, this isn't a troll. I'm just reaching out and seeing if a person would be interested in being published in a major magazine. Please feel free to ask any and all questions, either here or by email/pm.

I am breath hold spearo.
I was strongly opposed to scuba spearing in the past.
Over the years and with some arguments presented by various people on this forum, I came to recognise my own prejudices and a lack of knowledge.
I am of opinion that scuba spearing is (environmentally) second best way of catching fish, as you can be very selective. Saying that, one would have to have some regulations preventing overfishing.

So, in short, I am not sure if argument "breath hold spearfishing vs. scuba spearfishing" helps much either of the two camps with the general public.
It also fuels, perhaps unnecessary and often heated, debate between ourselves.

I would rather see joint front "spearing vs. other less selective ways of fishing".

I would not want to put you off publishing your article, as you are already half way there.
But perhaps it does not have to be confrontational. Maybe just pros and cons of both ways with comparison to each other.

All the best with your article.

(You would not believe how many people in the UK think spearfishing is illegal altogether.)

Good stuff! A tough one to delve into given the spectrum of some people's self-righteousness.

Good luck with the article and keep us updated.

Erik

Good luck with the article Johnoly. I for one have no problem with people spearing with scuba but I know its a touchy subject

Don Paul might be the man you looking for, will try and steer him in this direction

Many thanks for all the help. If the article just helps introduce spearfishing to those recreational divers that have never considered it, whether by breath hold or tanks it will help promote our sport. I also will be sure to post a link or other information when the article comes out.

Johnoly, if I might ask what is your username on SB, I don't go there much anymore but I may want to read a few of your posts. Thanks in advance.

Cheers, Don Paul

Thanks for the post up. And I'll answer every question you have.

I post under the same name everywhere, Johnoly.

I try to post alot of dive conditions reports to help out others who dive my area. Always include temps, viz, currents and put up a photo. Good bad and even slim fish. I get involved to keep my area's open to spear and I write up conditions reports to help other spearo's. Ask away any questions either by here, or email and I'll answer every one 100%.
