I am currently diving off of KZN in South Africa, and have been using pretty much no name brand style guns. unfortunately, i have realised you get what you pay for, and I was hoping for a no bs assesment of what guns are good for surf zone spearfishing in Natal. If you know of any specific dealers or shops in Natal that I could visit- pref on the North Coast, that would be great! Oh and i guess i should add that im not after HUGE boys, just around and under 15kilo fish

Hey buddy welcome to the forums

Guns are a very hot debateable issue, but from what i have learned in SA you buy railguns only. Strong and accurate. Im fairly new to this scene as well but have done some major research, and the two most popular distrobuters in SA is either Rabitech (CPT) and Rob Allen (KZN) Rabitech Spearfishing South Africa and Rob Allen - Your Friendswood, Pearland & Southeast Houston Real Estate Specialist i think personally i like the rabitech. The apex and stealth range is apparently very popular. But thats just my opinion you need to do some research into this yourself. Lenghts vary according to what you want to do with the gun, is in kelp a shorter 70-90cm is great but ive been told by those who know, start off wih a 90cm (fits most conditions and you get to learn how to load the gun too) and then move onto a 1.2m - 1,4m.

Hiya

For that type of work, a 110-130cm railgun will work very well. The excat length of the gun will be determined by how clean the water is, ie, the cleaner the water, the longer the gun. Speak to some of the local spearo's regarding gun length.

The most popular guns are Rob Allan and Rabitech railguns. Seems like Rabitechs are more prevalent in the Cape Town area and the RA's in your neck of the woods. Truth be told, they're pretty much the same, so either way, you'll be getting a good gun. There are many other imported brands, which cost 2-3 times the price of our locally made railguns. How-ever, all these guns normally come with too thin spears for our type of fish and they need to be upgraded at extra cost.

Oh YES! thanks so much manne for the input. its really cool. thanks alot. well we're constantly fighting poor vis on North Coast so i think prob the stubbier ones hey. I see Rabitech have an Apex. What is this?Oh and i noted both suppliers are very shy with prices. What do you think a 1.3m Rabitech Railgun would cost. haha in ZAR :t

The apex is a very nice gun. Ive got a 1.1 in it and I've never looked back, I must say its one of the best Ive ever used. Most of the diference is in the handle, some folks prefer the older designs but I like it. Its got a built in loading butt which makes for nice loading even without a wetsuit and the trigger mechanism and trigger is all stainless steel. Some of the other guns has a plastic trigger so thats your main diference. Im not sure if theres a diference in barrel cunstruction but not as far as I know. The rabi's especially from Lois are very well priced. I bought my gun and float setup with new mask and knife from him for the same price youll pay for a 900mm gun at say sportmans warehouse. The 900 rabiteck guns range from R650 and up.
