Good afternoon everyone. I'm spearfishing in Canada, mostly in lakes and rivers for small games (bass, sometime pikes, etc.). I have a cressi 75 cm which I love, it works perfectly for my needs.

However, I'm planning some trips in the ocean this summer (Like Rhode Island, USA). I have plenty of rubber and could easily install an additional sling to the one on my gun, but would that be enough ? Switching gun would be more costly than buying some additional obus :t

So I'd like to have your suggestions, not for models or brands, but for keeping my 75 cm vs. going for a 90-110cm gun.

Thanks a lot !

Dude, you can never have too many guns! Or motorbikes. Or cars lol. These are necessities!

Ah Erik, long time since we last talk!

You are right for this, but add to the mix : Carbon Tripod, Sea Kayak... and you see why I want to save some :waterwork

I wish I could... but I should... do I ?

LOL, yes it's difficult to get the bank account to agree with us sometimes. I've used my OMER 75 in bad or good vis and it's been fine, but adding another/bigger band can't hurt if the shaft will take it, in my opinion.
Cheers,
Erik

So adding a 9/16 to it shouldn't hurt, it has the hole for it and the spear has the extra notch, so it should be fine... my only concern would then be accuracy, I heard it can alter precision if overloaded...

That's what I've heard too- overload the shaft and it's all over the place.

So I know the rule for reef spearfishing is 90-110 cm, but is it really a problem going there with a 75 or I'm totally off...

I am on Eric's side - get another longer gun but you could also try a replacement 20mm power band?

i heard that for rhode island you will need a 90-100 cm gun...i think that what you should get....a 75cm cant be tuned to do what a 90-100 will do.... dont use a snow shovel to plow snow off the highway.....
i cant beleive it, i saw snow for the first time last month and already im using it in wise ass examples :):):) get the 100 dude :)

Thanks everyone, So a 100 with just one band will be enough for my need or do I need to plan on an extra band on it ?

In general I would say a one band gun can blast fish up to 20Kg (45lbs). Don't go too thick on the spear either or you will loose range and accuracy. I would say a 6.5mm spear up to 10 or 12Kg, a 7mm up to 20Kg

Good luck

OK, so I should get a one band speargun with a 90+ shaft (ideally 100+) and a 7mm spear if I'm planning to go for larger fish in RI. ... well time to save some $ then :head

Aloha David,

I'm not from the northeast but I do go there to hunt and love it. We just had our nationals there this summer and I'll be happy to let you know what I used there. I used a 90cm/42in, 105cm/50 in gun there.
The vis can vary from 3-50ft depending on the tides, weather and whre you dive. On average I would say vis of 6-15 is the norm. SO the need for a big gun is not that neccessary. If you had only one gun to take there, a 90 cm gun would be the choice. Second choice would be a 100 cm gun.
Rob Allen makes great guns and pretty much any euro style gun will work. One band is all you would need. Taugs and stripers will be your gamefish with the Scups as the challenging fish to shoot.
Good luck and heope this helps.

Aloha,Daryl

Daryl, thank you so much, definitely a great answer. I'm planning on getting a 100cm so I'm more versatile in the future. Anyhow, I'll keep my 75 for lake and river hunting. We have great viz sometime in Canada but shooting smaller bass at a distance is not like in the ocean...

Now the debate will be which gun ;) I use an Euro Cressi 75cm right now and love it. It's easy to find parts since I order mostly from ScubaStore. I'm looking into a 150-200 price range USD since I don't do competition and I don't plan on driving to Rhode Island more than 3-4 times a year.

I thougth on getting another Cressi (Like the Geronimo (not pro) or the Commanche (The one I have is an older model alike the commanche).

In addition to this, I'm still wondering if I'll go for a line to attach my gun to the buoy or a reel...

Thanks everyone to help me in this journey ;)

Maybe give jimdoe a shout, he treats we Canucks really well.

Aloha David,

You'll find that a reel will give you more freedom. Also if you dive some areas along jetties or where there can be current, a reel is much easier to dive with. you can bring a float line, but mainly to just mark a spot and hang your fish on.
The best way to dive most of Rhode Island is to go with a Kayak or if you know someone with a boat even better.
I have a contact for guy that takes dive charters out and he's a diver too. He knows pretty much all the hot spots since his main thing is to take out fisherman to catch trophy stripers. His fees are reasonable and if you go with a group of four, its pretty cheap.
If anyone wants it, email me at dmcwong@hawaii.rr.com
You can see the big striper he put me on in the opening page of my website. www.wongspearguns.com

Aloha,Daryl

If course if you get more bucks, you should by a Wong gun!
