I am mostly an ocean swimmer / diver, but my swim club training is in a 25 m indoor pool.
Whenever I swim in an indoor pool (no matter where it is), the next day I will nearly always get symptoms such as nose congestion, runny nose, and failure in yawning / not feeling air passing through my inner ear. The warmer the water, the more severe my symptoms.
I didn't realise how serious it was until yesterday when it ruined the quality of my training session. I went to an indoor diving pool overseas and got one training session on Monday. It went really good and I was going up and down effortlessly to a depth I never reached before, down to -20 m. However, on Tuesday, when I duck dived, I immediately felt pain above my eyebrow so I was forced to abort the descent, and eventually I could only go down by slowing my descent and increasing the frequency of equalisation (including a few times of pre-equalisation on the surface), and at the end of the morning session I reached -24 m.
Later in the day, I reduced my depth and, towards the end of the day, I could no longer do any head-first descent beyond about 8 metres without getting pain and had to switch to feet-first freefalling afterwards, so the quality of my dives was ruined (there was a photographer early on in the session, and the footage showed an equalisation failure, and also a pause in a descent trying to equalise) as I could no longer do a proper dive to the depth I wanted, and after getting out I still have a little feeling above my eyebrow after repeated pressure.
I never had experienced such things in the past in my fun dives / dive trips in the ocean, and I learnt diving in the ocean as well, and this two days were the first time I do depth training with my buddy after getting the certification.
I am now concerned about myself if pools are causing problems in my respiratory system, and if the symptoms such as nose congestion, runny nose, yawning problems are directly related to pressure / equalisation problems. Should I stop doing depth training in a diving pool in the future and only stick to the ocean?
