NZ Depth Nationals 2012

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I'm just looking at booking some time off work for this - when is it likely we'll be able to train at the lake? I'm pretty rusty so would need a few days getting back into the swing of it.

Cheers,
Ben

G'Day Ben. I'm looking at heading to Taupo about 3 or 4 days earlier to get some training in as well. We have another tentative participant wanting to do some early training. I'll have a pretty big tent if you require accomodation before or during the comp.

I think the campground fees are about $12NZD per night, per person.

Cheers!!

Hi Ben,

There is a training option in Auckland too, diving in Lake Pupuke prior to heading down to Taupo. It would be good for Thermoclimatisation too!
Vis was up to 5m today!

Just some points of interest to help avoid some of the stumbling blocks for anyone planning on attending the Freediving Depth Nationals in Taupo next month (23 - 25 March).

The competition base camp will be at Motutere Bay Holiday Park.
If you don't have a cabin booked by now, it looks like your best option is to pitch a tent if you want to stay close to the action.

If you do decide to "rough" it, powered sights are available, but they don't tell you that you need an RCD adapter to be able to plug into the power boards. Be sure to bring one of those as they don't rent them either.

Here is the website for the Camp Grounds. This should give you all the information that you need.

I decided to rough it last year and had the luxury of waking up right beside the water....literally a meter or two away.

Here is what you can expect if pitching a tent.

Other than that, if you have any questions, feel free to contact us through the AIDA New Zealand website or download an information pack.

Hmm, I am a bit of a wuss and like my mod-cons such as a stable roof. I'm still waiting for my leave to get approved - do you suspect that the cabins may have been taken up by now? I was also thinking of hiring a car for the week so that might extend my accom options a little. My barrista chick is a North Islander so i'll be hitting her up for some info too

Ps Dave Dobbyn was on telly here last week, it must be a sign!

Hi Ben,

Yes, I'm afraid that the cabins have all been spoken for. We were lucky to get a few for the judges, safety divers and some competitors. Was a bit tight.

Apparently there is another function happening that weekend as well.

All the best!!

Wade

It's possible we can find you a roof. It won't be at the campground, but a few guys have access to baches in the area that you can sneak your way in to. As for car hire, you can save a few dollars and rely on us for transport. We'll all be driving to the lake, so there'll be a few cars around. Of course if you're keen for a bit of a tiki tour around, then a car is pretty handy.

Hey thanks for all the good advice guys. Well as it turns out my leave got approved today so it looks like it's a go-ahead. I'd say if I book with Virgin i'll be flying into Wellington around 3pm on Friday 16th and flying out Monday 26th at 3pm also from Wellington. Depending on who's around it might be easiest to rent a car, particularly if i'm staying a bit further away from the lake. Speaking of, does anyone know of some alternative accommodation nearby? I had a quick look on google but that didn't show me a great deal. Actually it said the Motutere Bay Holiday Park was up north somewhere near Tauranga? :duh

Heard from anyone else from Oz yet? Unfortunately I haven't heard much in the way of murmors...

Cheers,

Excellent- we'll keep a sheep warm for you.

I'm happy to provide accommodation in Wellington for you when you get here, then you can work out finer details about getting to the lake. We could try to do a weekend trip up there and you can just stay longer maybe.

I thought so.

Sorry Phil, just copy and pasted what was sent to me.
Corrected now.

Cheers!!

It looks like tough diving beyond 50m... It must be freezing. Maybe it's a good venue for Sebastian Murad and his new cool-your-brain-into-hibernation-approach.
