NZ Depth Nationals 2012

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Yes, the thermocline made for some interesting diving. It was often a good idea to get into the water a bit early so you could get your breathing under control.

Surface temp was a balmy 17 degrees. I now like to refer to Taupo as the Wrench cause every time I think of it, my nuts tighten up.

what kinda suits were being used for best-effort dives? Orca's and the like? Or 5mm spear suits
 
Sam Barnes was brave enough to wear his Orca Free. The rest of us were in either 3mm or 5mm suits.

A big pat on the back for the Safety Divers and in water judges as they were in the water for hours at a time without complaint. We did however let them out once in a while for some food and water, then we would push them back in.

All in all it was a fantasic effort by everyone involved, organisers as well as divers for being so well behaved when the boats got crowded, being quiet while the divers were on the line and supporting one another with good humor and lots of laughs to fend off the cold.

We even had divers that donated some very cool gifts to the prize pool. It was a great weekend and I'm sure everyone went home with a story to tell.

First time poster, long time lurker.

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to all who were involved in organizing this - it was a mammoth effort and everything ran super smooth for us competitors (even when we missed the briefings!).

It was my first comp (I'm Rich B) so I was pretty nervous - but everyone was super nice and relaxed, and there was a great sense of camaraderie.

I'll definitely be back next year!

If you want some warmer water - you should join us for the DeepObsession Depth Comp in Pupuke this year too. It will be announced here and on the AIDA NZ site and the Auckland Freediving site as well.

Typically a 50m limit due to lake depth - unless of course you want to dive with a spade.
