Hi. I'm gonna get a suit from www.diveskin.net. If somebody would check this link for me I would really appreciate it. It either comes with a long john or waist up pants. This will be my first suit and have no clue which one to get. I live in Oregon and the water is colder than I'd like it be. I'm getting the 5mm suit in cammo. I also have the option of having nylon or slick skin interior, I don't know which I should choose. :head

Have no experience with diveskin, but generally high pants seem to work better in apnea suits regarding warmth and flexibility.
For interior nylon won't be as warm as open cell (slick skin in his site), the difference is usually notable, so for Or waters I'd say open cell.
It is more flexible yet more delicate. But with good care an opencell suit can still last for several years.

Yeah, I thought the long johns were generally for wearing under your suit. Like the ones you wear under your snow pants, for added warmth. I'd much rather have a 6mm suit but he doesn't make them, so I thought that buying a long john would remedy that. I guess the term long john is completely different in this sport.

Long john in a freedive suit means that there are straps over the shoulders and a little extra on the chest, and yes it's underneath the top part of the suit.
The advantages of long waist pants are that you can easily take a pee at the shore or on a boat without taking the top off, and you might breath a little easier.
Any freedive suit should be bare open neoprene on the inside, especially in the climates you (and I) are in. Don't get a suit that has nylon or cloth or even sprayed on metalic lining. Just bare 'open-cell' neoprene. You will need to lube the suit to get it on and off, but it's worth the slight extra effort.
Custom fit, which is cheap in freedive suits from Europe, is worth the few $$ extra. Trust me

Thanks Eric, much appreciated. Do you wear a 5mil suit? I just hope it'll be warm enough. A custom suit from Oceanos is actually free of charge, so I'll definitely be sporting one. I'll post a my gear list tomorrow, just to make sure everything is right and practical for my region.

I'll be getting the waist up pants with my suit, hopefully it seals with the top well.

I have worn a 5mm Picasso and 3mm Elios with vests over top for better core warmth.
The 3mm custom suit was as warm as the standard 5mm suit.
One of the tricks with high waist pants that are opencell-in and nylon-out is this: pull the pants up, then turn down about 10 cm of the pant at the top. This will seal against the top of the suit, helping to prevent water getting in. My suit never lets water in, ever.
By the way, I have a new Elios 7mm custom suit on the way for this season, just to extend time in the water and do some relatively deeper aspeeto, as we have brutal thermoclines in our lakes up here. I also wear dry gloves all season.

5mm will be fine for Oregon coast and lakes. Sunny days and surface temps are the most important factor. You will be impressed with that suit no doubt. Most of us who went from wearing scuba-style (cloth-lined/zippers/crap) wetsuits to freedive/spearo suits were blown away with the comfort, flexibility and warmth first time in.

how high do the high waist pants come? i know that the long johns (correct me if i am wrong) come up to the chest area, but what about thw high waist pants?

High waste pants come up about to the solar plexus. I use a 5 mil open cell suit - with 'black shadow' coating and have been diving all winter comfortably. Water temp is 34F. Dives are relatively short however - generally one or two hours.
