A small group of freedivers, both new to the sport and seasoned veterans, will be meeting at Gilboa Quarry on January 1, 2013 to start the new year off right! We will be meeting at Gilboa around 1130am to check in and hope to be in the water by noon.

The quarry is an amazing place to freedive with a plane, helicopter, school bus, and a handful of boats to swim through. The deep side provides an excellent location for those that want to work on achieving depths >100 feet. The dive line drops straight down to the max depth of 122 feet with a training platform resting at 70 feet. For more information about the quarry and fees, visit their website at Gilboa Quarry Scuba Diving

If you are interested in joining us, either respond here on DB or find us on facebook. Our page is Ohio Valley Freedivers. Hope to see some new faces for the 2013 year!!

Do you guys take pics when you do these trips? It would be interesting to see them.

Here is video from our day

Enjoy, we certainly did!

Looks like you guys had a nice time. Do you dive that quarry often, or is it usually a New Year's thing?

Y'all may be cold as ice but yr nuttier than fruitcakes to be in that water! Seriously--looks like you had a lot of fun and the palne looks like a cool place to explore. :girlie

Thanks for the comments! Yes, we dive this quarry all the time. It is a great place to train even if it is a little cold. It usually has great viz. Summer surface temps can hit the 80's but the first thermocline hits at about 25 ft where it drops into the 60's then again just below 50 ft it drops into the 40's all summer. Nice thing about winter is no thermocline! Gilboa has depths to 120 ft plus and besides this plane also a huge cargo helicopter, school bus and the usual boats, cars, platforms and tubes. Plus the owner is freedive friendly!!!!!! We are trying hard to grow freediving here in the Buckeye state :) I will put some more videos up from here.

my edit is def not as good as freedivinmike's, but still shows us havin a great time

Looks like you guys have a lot of fun. Gilboa Quarry looks like a really cool setup, too. Is it owned by the dive shop, or is the shop just a part of the facility? Do you get to spearfish anything there?

We have a blast diving here and anywhere else for that matter. It is not owned by a dive shop, just a wonderful man that puts a lot of time and effort into making it the premier place to dive in the midwest! He has put some awesome things in the water to dive (grunman airplane, sikorsky helicopter, school bus, etc.) There is no spearing at Gilboa. Spearing elsewhere in Ohio is allowed but only for rough fish and most lakes have zero viz. I have often times seen the viz at Gilboa be 70' plus.

Almost a thousand views on this thread and not one person other than me and Tarzan from Ohio!!! What gives??? We need more freedivers here in the great buckeye state! Please share our videos on facebook everyone and help us find some more divers. Our facebook page is Ohio Valley freedivers and my name is Mike Kell on there. Thanks!!!!!!! Can you tell I am on a desperate mission to recruit more freedivers? More freedivers here = more time in the water :wave
