hello!!!

I would like to know if all pneumatic spearguns need oil inside the barrel since Im trying to fix my little one that I broke from the barrel and I've read something about puting oil thru the valve.

any advise would be of help

thanks

Yes. You can use castor oil or mineral oil. At least in the US mineral oil is much cheaper. The idea is to use as pure oil as possible so it would not affect o-rings and would maintain the same viscosity over the working range of temperature. Both castor and mineral oil satisfy these requirements. They are recommended for internal consumption as stomach remedies. I use mineral oil in my Mares Cyrano. My father has been using castor oil in his gun for at least thirty years.

Hope this helps.

I have been recommend here to use 5W motorcycle fork oil. Never tried though.

Yep, the motorcycle fork oil works very well and is cheaper. Dont put much, tough. It depends on the size of the gun. If it is "a little" gun (30 cm), use just 10 cc; for a 40 cm 15 cc; and for a 55 cm 20 cc. The only use for the oil is to lubricate the internal parts. For the same reason, it is convenient to hang your gun with the barrel pointing down, to lubricate the piston which is the most critical part and the most likely to get "stuck" when not used frequently. Once in a while you change the position, to lubricate the trigger mechanism and the valve, but after a day or so put the barrel pointing down again. Good luck.

thanks a lot for all your comments I feel better Knowing how much oil tu use by the size

I used Mares oil that I bought in a diving shop - it works for all of my pneumatic guns (I have three) well so far

The reason for the oil is 3 fold 1. to lube moving parts(piston release mech) 2. to create a seal on O Rings and piston 3rd. to line the barrel after each shot with a thin film to eliminate corrosion as the barrel floods after loading unless you are a MAMBA.

I just picked up a super old Mares LongTom for $44 bucks and i believe its a 90cm i just repaired it and i was wondering how much oil do i put in it?

mahalo

If the gun is the "Long Tom" then it is the "Super Sten" which is 100 cm and takes 30 ml of oil. The "Sten", which used to be 90 cm and then 84 cm (depends on how they measured it, to back of the grip or the back of the receiver where the inlet cap is located) also takes 30 ml of oil. The much longer guns (over 110 cm) use 35 ml of oil as the larger the air tank then the more "wetted" internal surface for oil to cling to, but it is only a thin film, so the incremental increase required is not that great as the guns get progressively longer. You just need enough free moving oil to slosh around inside the gun without it all clinging to the internal walls. Too much oil does nothing but decrease the internal air capacity, so don't overdo filling the gun with oil, but a few extra ml will not adversely affect the performance.

use mineral oil sae 5w for sawing machines, i am using this oil for over 35 years
