gotta a tough question... anyone know what the rules are for diving near oil rigs in southern california? since the beef-up of security, I understand that the oil rigs may have a "do not come too close" rule or even there might be laws or ordinances to keep people at a certain minimal distance. maybe there is a site I could be directed to?.

My understanding is there are not any set rules, as they change with the level of the security alert in effect at that time. I know they allow commercial dive boat operators to dive on certain rigs, but I am not sure about private boats. The best bet would be to check with the Coast Guard, or a commercial dive boat captain.
finally got what I needed. the rules are listed on this link: http://www.washingtonwatchdog.org/documents/cfr/title33/part147.html#147.1111 I got this from the coast guard and this link has a listing of the platforms that have boundaries. as put by the CG that helped me... if it's not on this list you can dive anywhere, just don't touch the platform unless you get the platform owner's permission. water is water, the platform is privately owned.
