Posted on Thursday:
The oil spill which happened in the earlier hours of today has caused havoc for the tourism industry of Fujairah and Sharjah, on the east coast areas of the United Arab Emirates.

Photos sent to Deeperblue.net from Divers Down on the East Coast of Sharjah, represent extreme damage to marine life, beaches and the sun seeking tourists of what is normally a golden sandy beach have been driven away.

Dive centres are still reporting that no assistance has been offered to finance the cleanup of these areas and hotels, such as the Le Meridien Al Aqah, are financing their own cleanups in order to rid the beaches of the mess as soon as possible.

No company has claimed ownership or fault to the damage and the Ministry of Environment is allegedly shrugging their shoulders and not offering any solutions. The latest is that a local bank was going to foot the cleanup bill of 102,000Dhs to clean up the mess, and the Environmental Agency stepped and said dont do, it we'll do it. However NOTHING IS BEING DONE, only a few workers appeared on the public beach with plastic bags?????

If there are any of you that work for big companies or have connections who can help Divers Down to clean up the beach, please contact Dirk or Carla at the Dive Centre:

Please help as this affects Shark Island, Snoopy Island, the snorkelling and the East Coast is the last remains of our precious diving and beaches in the UAE. Also the livelihoods of local fisherman are greatly affected.

Any money that can be donated, or even in form of contract work to help clean up, please contact the Dive Centre. The Ministry of Environment have practically closed their doors on the dive centre and will not help at all.

All donations can go to

ACCOUNT NAME: PAUL SANT
ACCOUNT TITLE: KHOR FAKKAN DIVING CENTRE
ACCOUNT NUMBER: 0909120524
SWIFT CODE: BOMLAEAD

Any of you who can help or know someone that could assist please pass this on.

Thanks,
Sara-Lise
