Couldn't think of a more imaginative title, but...
About a year ago, I saw a TV programme about food called 'Supermarket Secrets' which mentioned that trans fats, found in hydrogenated vegetable oil, are unhealthy. I stopped eating all foods which contain hydrogenated vegetable oil. This proved to be very difficult, because at the time almost all bakery products contained it, along with a very large number of prepared foods and cooking ingredients. I realised I had been eating quite a lot of these foods.

I have also been eating more oily fish. This isn't too difficult because I like all kinds of fish!

The improvement in my health has been incredible. I used to suffer very badly from heartburn and acid indigestion, and no medication had been successful. It has almost disappeared now. I still have to avoid eating too late in the evening to avoid getting heartburn at night, but as long as I do this I hardly ever get heartburn or indigestion of any kind.

I also used to have terrible period pains which lasted for days. Now this has improved greatly.

I used to have joint pains, mostly in my hands and ankles, and I was worried about going to college, because there is a lot of walking and manual work involved. I haven't had any joint pains, though I am now doing more walking, including uphill, than I have ever done before. The hand pain has also disappeared.

I get much less colds and flu, even when other people around me have colds. Before, I used to get an unbelievable number of colds and flu, one after another, in the autumn, winter and spring. If anyone around me had a cold, I knew that I would definitely catch it very badly, and that I would probably get secondary infections and feel ill for at least a week. This year has been the best in all my life. I don't think I have ever felt this well.

I have not changed my diet or lifestyle in any other way. I have never eaten large quantities of fried food or fast food. I am not eating less of other fats such as butter or meat, and I am eating the same amount of foods such as wheat and dairy products, so the only things that have changed are the decrease in hydrogenated fat and the increase in oily fish.

lucia,
when you say oily fish, you mean like salmon and mackerel??
i think they are rish in Omega 3 fats..
i changed my diet about 3 months ago to high protein, low fat...i also changed the pattern , i used to eat 2 times a day, big melas, i have shifted to eating 6 times a day, 3 meals and 3 snacks,
it made a huge differnece in my life, i started eating stuff i never used to keep as my normal diet, like oatmeal and almonds...I changed also a little bit in my workout, i did not loose weight as a result but i lost fat... and definitely look and feel healthier
i know i shifted off topic a little bit, but i have been reading a bit on diets etc... and transfats are like the worst possible thing that enters your system... so if you could avoid them thats definietly much better, most foods will specify the amount of transfats on their nutrition info on the pack

Transfats are very bad, many supermarkets here in the UK are moving towards removing them from all their own-brand products. Unfortunately many foods still have them.

The ingredients with trans fats are:
Hydrogenated vegetable oil
Hydrogenated vegetable fat
Partially hydrogenated vegetable oil
Partially hydrogenated vegetable fat
Hardened vegetable fat
Vegetable shortening
Any oil or fat with 'hydrogenated' in it

Some websites on trans fats...

Pasta with fish for me! :D

I have changed my diet from a standard high fat high protein meat ,egg cheese diet. I also would indulge couple times a month in all you can eat buffet where I would always try to eat my money's worth. I have gone vegan in hopes of not haveing expensive health issues. My biggest change noted has been in my sinuses. I never thought of myself with allergies however find breathing thru my nose much easier. Down side to this change is the rest of my family still loves a high fat diet and sometime food go's to waste where in past I would it just eat it so would not go to waste whether or not being hungry. Changeing my diet was easy related to seeing daily in others what bad choices can do to our health obesity, arthritis. diabetes, hypertension and MI'S AND CVA'S just to mention a few. I am just to damn cheap to want to pay the medical doctors and drug companies for my self indulgences. I hope the changes I made will help past damage done from tobacco, fat and sugar it's to bad a good diet can't improve spelling or sentence structure.
Thankyou for the good topic, ROB

Rob,

Does that mean no more Italian sausages and chedder bratwurst after the dive?

I don't know if I could go back to vegan again, but I have changed the diet a bit since last summer- getting old sucks.rofl

I have heard that transfats are illegal, in the USA, in things like dog food. This was due to the fact that it's a man made fat and the animal feed guidelines wouldn't allow it to be added.

Jon, after posting my wife who has the flu requested food meaning Pork steak, rice always lot of white rice, and some corn. I on the other hand ate a pear and latter tonight will have a bowl of oatmeal with hot sauce on it. I have been unwilling to give up my half gallon of coffee a day for fear family or friends will have thought i joined a cult. Not sure if i will be able to get motivated to take the dog for a apenic walk its windy out.

I'd have a hard time at this point in my life quiting the coffee as well- maybe when the kids are older and I can actually sleep through the night.

I did try to quit a few months ago, I lasted three weeks, and my wife got ticked at me. I didn't get head aches or anything like that, but I guees I was so tired the whole time that I wasn't much for conversation.rofl

As a baby step I have started to switch to half-calf in the mornig and nothing past noon.

I changed my diet about a year ago to eating mostly organic foods with plently of veggies and whole grains. I also eat lean meats (fish and chicken), but usually at lunch, which is my largest meal of the day.

Generally I avoid any processed foods and refined sugar and sweets and only eat until I'm about 80% full. The result was that I lost 15 pounds (time for a new Elios suit:) ) and have a constant high-energy level throughout the day without the ups and downs. I still crave sugar once in a while, but I realize I'm not hungry, just craving sugar, and I can usually keep it away. Sugar for some reason is more difficult to kick than nicotine was!

Unusually, eating this way means that I rarely eat out at restaurants anymore as they tend to use cheap oils and fats and generally less quality ingredients as they need to keep their food cost down.

with all the medical knowledge out there i am constantly amazed that people still dont know what a healthy diet is. 80% fruits and verges and complex carbs. (Brown rice, whole wheat ect)
Little if none commercially raised meat, way to much fat. Even chicken is loaded with fat. Lots of fish, shelfish and if you can get it, for your meat, beef that is pasture fed not fattened up at a feedlot. A wild deer is great meat, or wild pig. Hardly andy fat there.
A moderate amount of acholol, diet soda if you ar going to drink soda. Caffine is ok. No smoking
Add daily exercise and no gentic dieases and you will live to be a healthy happy 100. Oh forgot a happy marriage to.

Glad your health has improved :)

I have stopped eating fast food compleatly and I am trying to eat healthier. Im noticing that I have more energy in the mornings which is good because I normaly would get to school and go back to sleep

With my diet I have just cut out pop (soda). I used to drink at least 1 pop a day when I was in high school. After leaving high school and going to College I started to work out and I lost a fair amount of weight (15-20 lbs). When I got back from College I wouldn't drink pop or eat chocolate.

With my current diet I am not really exercising much and I still maintain a good bodyweight for myself. I try my best to listen to my body and feed its cravings. I notice I get cravings for some foods (mainly fish or chicken). I do my best to feed that craving and fullfill other needs (veggies... I crave some veggies but not all :))

I don't smoke, drink (alcohol) or drink coffee. I drink mainly juices (orange, apple). If I get a craving for sugar or something I reach for fruit if possible.

Yeah I'm with you there, I always order water in resturants. Also when you stop drinking pop if you ever taste it again its VERY different. I think its the carbination that is causing the different taste. (I haven't had a carbinated drink in a long time)

Bakery products with hydrogenated fat are the worst for causing heartburn and acid indigestion. Pies, pasties, biscuits, cakes, bread and anything with pastry can contain that fat, and they give me terrible heartburn, acid indigestion and bloated feeling. It is not a wheat intolerance, because bakery products without hydrogenated fat don't have the same effect.

Another good effect of avoiding that fat is that it is easier to do the washing up, because I don't have to wash it off baking trays and frying pans with large quantities of hot water and washing up liquid. rofl

I just can’t walk past a bakery without having a pie, a pasty, a cake and a fresh loaf of bread with half a dead pig (ham) stuffed into it. UUUMMM Hydrogenated fat, AAAA Heartburn you got a love it.:)
Welcome to my world.rofl rofl

Nothing like fresh bread, I agree. :p
Bread is the first thing I miss when I'm abroad. Apart from Switzerland, I might add. The swiss seem to be the only people outside southern Germany who make decent bread. And there's no fat involved in bread-making here, apart from that contained in the occasional pumpkin-, poppy- or sesame-seed added. Things like sugar and fat just don't belong in bread.
Of course, all of this is much a matter of opinion and taste, I am not writing of absolute truth, but of my personal likings here. ;)

Se jörmans - sey just love seir bread.. :p

When I Was A Kid I Had A Uncle Who Made Bread With Beer In It. It Smelled Great And The Taste Was Semi Sweet Anyone Else Out There Eat Beer Bread.

They make that here, but not throughout the year, as it's a seasonal product. I believe it is made in (the time of (?)) Lent - the time between Ash Wednesday and Easter.

BTW: Why do You capitalize every word You write? Is there any deeper meaning to this? My capitalizing the 'You' comes from the german custom to capitalize pronouns addressing the recipient (in letters only). I find this makes letters more personal :)
