So I've always wanted to be able to hold my breath for a long time. Just recently I visited a magic show and the magician did a water escape. He was down for about 2 minutes. I knew there had to be a trick, so I started googling.

I found this site and tried it. How to Hold Your Breath for Long Periods of Time - wikiHow
I timed myself like I would normally hold my breath. I got about 30 sec.
I did this twice last night. First try, 1:05. I was like pretty happy. Second try, 1:50. I wasn't really tired or anything when I was done either. So I went in my hot tub today and tried in the water. First time 1:30. Second time, 2:00. Is this a good way to do it. I tried about 1:30 after doing my 2:00 attempt without the whole warm up and I got almost a minute. I am just looking for some more information about this. Is what I am doing safe? I mean to go from 30 sec to 2 min in a day is crazy, but awesome.

Tried tonight: 2:10
Oh, and I wasnt really breathing hard after any of these attempts.

Don't ever intentionally hyperventilate when diving, it can cause you to blackout without warning and die.

Not to mention - if you ever pratice in water/hot tub - you should have someone watch you- just in case something were to happen. Black outs. if no one is available to watch pratice dry.

Hey mate welcome to DB, glad to see you finally ended up in a place where you can get advise on how to do it properly. Id advise you to read through this thread, lots of info to get you in the know http://forums.deeperblue.net/beginner-freediving/64959-how-start-freediving.html and then this one or one of the many others like it to see what can happen http://forums.deeperblue.net/safety/72421-alomst-died-my-dynamic-attemt.html.
That site that you read from not only tells you to hyperventilate but also to do packing, you can seriously damage your lungs doing this. So what Id also suggest is find a good freediving coarse and try it with the people who can teach you how to do it properly in a face to face environment, work on your skills and take it slowly...

So I read that thread already. Is there any techiniques I need to learn or is it just simply holding a breath. And theres no way I can do those tables just on breaths. Like I said earlier I can get about 30 seconds.

You can do those tables, they are flexible. Otherwize experts and beginners couldnt do them, you didnt read up enough. Even if you can only hold your breath for 10 seconds you can do tables. You always just adjust the tables for your max breathold.

For example if you can do a 2 minute breathold - like you did so dangerously in the water.

Take 1/2 of that for your breathold for a CO2 table (or adjust it to whatever your max static breathold is)

1:00 Breath hold 3:00 rest
1:00 Breath hold 2:50 rest
1:00 Breath hold 2:40 rest
1:00 Breath hold 2:30 rest
1:00 Breath hold 2:20 rest
1:00 Breath hold 2:10 rest
1:00 Breath hold 2:00 rest
1:00 Breath

You will be amazed with how easy this table gets at the end. Good luck and always err on the safe side. And use the search function on the website.

O by the way a friend was there. Ok thanks for the info. So pretty much the way to do it is just adjust the tables and do them?

And I cant do 2 minutes unless I use the strategy on that page I linked.

Yeah, just adjust the breath hold portion for your max static breath hold. Read more info, its all here on some page or another.

Ok a question about the mamalian dive reflex.

Can you hold your breath longer underwater than you can on dry land then?

Dive reflex normally kicks in after a few dives or while holding your breath with your face submerged in cold water, allthough for alot of people it does not kick in immediately, its normally something that has to be trained into you and the only way I find to do that is to dive. On a typical day of diving Id do a few duckdives down to the bottom, wait for 3rd or so contraction (normally under a minute) and go back up. After about 3 or 4 of these I start diving and then feel like I can stay under for much longer (1min 30 working dive at 10 to 15m deep). Diving buddies of mine who dive very regularly can get theirs to kick in by doing one or two breath holds...
On freediving coarses look around the site there are quite a few mentioned here, use AIDA for your search or go directly to the AIda website AIDA International

hey, a friend might have been there but make sure he's trained on what to do should something go wrong....you need to read up before you do this stuff in water....

I replied similarly in another thread, and can only mirror what has allready been said.
read Sipperlies "Freedive" repeatedly!!
and be cautious about your lungs.

Simple method at the surface, use a bowl of ice water in the shower, and splash your face and chest! while holding your breath at your first or second contraction.

if your wife or girlfriend doesnt catch you doing something strange, your mammalian dive reflex may or may not kick in, but at least you will get an invigorating wake up call with the cold water, and you can attempt your breath hold with some renewed sobriety!!!

try tables before and after to compare your results, it may not work at all with you, but it might be worth a try.

people have survived in cold waters after going way beyond hypoxic, after being medically revived, so there is some exploration to be done there, just be sriously cautious.
