For freedivers, Oman has plenty to offer - especially as an 'adventure freediving' venue.

Most dives spots feature coral reefs, combined with large underwater rock structure. There is a large variety of tropical marine life here. There are whalesharks, dolphins, whales, large gamefish and various species of sharks - all of which are regularly encountered at certain times of the year.

Depending on the freedivers requirements, depths range from 'snorkelling depth' down to 30 metres and much more (diving from boat). In spring and summer, visibility ranges from decent (10 metres) up to 20 metres and more on good days. There is also often very little current, and calm surface waters for breath-ups.

Two of the most popular scuba/freediving destinations are Fahal Island, a large rocky island 4 kilometres offshore of Muscat; and the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve, a collection of smaller 'desert' islands surrounded by coral reefs, about a 30 minute boat ride from the coastline.

We have plenty of depth here (60m, 70m, 80m and over 100 metres and more) that is relatively easy to access via a short boat ride. However, these depths tend to lack the ease-of-use of the Blue Holes, Mediterranean, Red Sea etc, so they don't really lend themselves to setting personal bests or national records.

Still, experienced freedivers would have little hassle planning and executing a series of deep constant weight, free-immersion or no-fins dives during the spring and summer diving season (even setting up a counter-ballast system). There are also dozens of sheltered bays and coves where a dive line can be set up to work on depth adaption skills, equalisation techniques, partial lung dives etc - this is the kind of freediving that Muscat is perfect for.

Oman - especially Muscat - is an excellent place to be if you're training long term for a PB or record (we have a decent 50 metre pool too). But you'd probably want to do your final, deep, record dives at the previously mentioned Blue Holes, Med', Red Sea etc.
