G'day,

I have just returned from a Spearfishing trip where my dive buddies and I ran into some Kingfish which were around 10kg+. I had a perfect shot at one from about 2-3 meters away and hit it just behind the pectoral fin. The spear hit the mark exactly. However, as soon as the fish ran and the shooting line went tight, the spear pulled out. I must not have had enough penetration for the flopper to do its job.

Both my dive buddies were able to land their fish - 9.5kg and 11.5kg - as they had full penetration with their guns.

My Omer Cayman HF 110 is currently set up with a 7mm shaft, reel, shooting line bungie, Omer 66cm x 18mm rubber, and a double Dyneema bridle.

So, to avoid any further loss of fish, I'd like to make my gun as powerful as possible, without putting too much load on the barrel and spear.

My question is, what band(s) would you reccommend for my gun when targeting bigger fish?

Cheers,

Shorerider.

A 66cm is too long for a 110, especially if it's an Omer Power 18. Definitely. I don't dislike Power 18, theyre smooth and progressive (when new) but I would not pick them if I'd need a strong "punch" to pierce a big fish.

Get a 60cm loop band. I don't know what brand of rubber you have access to there in OZ.
Cressi G20 maybe?

PS: spear is no less important with penetration issues. Don't forget to sharpen the tip and to check the flopper.

Thanks for the reply Spaghetti.

I am thinking of replacing the Omer band with either a single 18-20mm or a double 16mm set up. I'd be using USA Latex (black outer with amber core)

If I went to the twin 16mm bands, it would make the gun slightly more versatile as I also use the gun to target smaller fish. Would they also need to be 60cm?

The shaft was a new 7mm Pelaj shaft with a tri-cut tip. However, I think that the angle of the profile was too sharp for bigger fish. It is roughly 45deg. I will try to re-sharpen the tip with a shallower/pointier profile to aid in penetration.

Cheers,

Shorerider.
