I recently got an aluminum omer excalibur 100 for a unreal price and brand spanking new.Single 20mm band and unrigged.I want to keep the 20mm band and rig it up but not sure if I should go with a single wrap of mono or double
wrap .Also have seen the mono strung thru the shaft with a knot on the other side but I normally rig a complete loop with a crimp. I will also be using my own crimps instead of the ones supplied in the rigging kit(very small). Thanks for the imput.

I would go with two wraps, that is what I used in my blackviper 100, but it is a matter of taste. I have no input about the crimping, I would go with the classical way. But may be there is an advantage (I would like hear if there is).

A single wrap of mono in a 100cm gun means that the spear-tip can reach up to about 4.8m from the muzzle (that is about 13 feet if I am not mistaken). To that you may add an extra 2m for the double wrap.
Given that a 100cm gun with single pair of 20mm bands and a 6.5mm/140cm shaft has an effective range of about 3.5-4m (on medium or small sized fish) the extra length of mono would only be a trouble to use and may give the fish you shoot the chance to hole-up after the shot cause they will be able to swim away with the shaft for longer distance than with a single wrap.

Definitely double wrap and definitely crimp and forget the knot. With that rubber set up you will always need enough line so that spear does not 'snap' back when it reaches end of line. The knot won't last either and in my opinion it affects flight of spear as it's 'off balance' whereas crimping balances things out.

I'm with Galadion about single wrap and with Spaniard about crimp and knots. Just make sure that your bigger sleeves will pass under the muzzle without attrition: the muzzle "bridge" is quite narrow and the small Omer standard sleeves fit perfectly for it.
(on my old excalibur 100 carbonium I use single wrap mono, rigged to a reel provided with spectra/dyneema).

Hiya

Single wrap. As mentioned above, your spear will only be effective for the range a single wrap has. Its pretty easier to see that you aren't hunting very clean waters, or else the gun would've been longer, so a double wrap will offer no advantages and only take longer to load and increase your tangles.

miles

ps. post some pic's of those fish you're going to harrass!!:D:D

Thanks all for the imput.I planned to finish rigging it tonight but will get it done tomorrow.I already cut the mono for a single wrap and made and installed a new bungie. It's pretty much ready except for crimping.Might give it a go this weekend.

i would advise you to reconsider the 20 mm as well, especially for aluminum barrel 100 gun, i have the same gun but in carbon fiber, with a 6.5 mm shaft i found the 18 mm bands to be perfect, very powerful and not too hard for loading, i even use them with 6.75 mm shaft, very effective for hunting groupers. if you move up to a 7mm shaft then yes go for the 20mm, just my opinion
