ive been looking to get a pair of the ice fins for a while, but it seems that every person i ask about them has a different oppinion on them, are they that good, are they worth the price,or do they just look incredibly awsome and thats it...just wanna know what you think
 
Funny you should ask Sure they do reflect light at some angles - though less so as they get scratched up. Mine have been heavily used and are very scratched - but they remain transparent underwater because the water largely fills the scratches. Fish still crash into them.

But let me get organized

Stealth: These fins definitely reduce your profile and, even more important, perceived movement. I use them for freedive photography and have had very good success getting close to some of the more difficult species around here. Watching smallmouth bass actually bump into them helped convince me. If you think about it from a fish's perspective - your huge fins add nearly 3 feet to you, and they are the part that is moving the most.

Durability: I've had mine now for a year or so of diving, on average, several times a week. I dive often along a rock breakwall covered with razor sharp zebra muscles. My fins are very scratched but retain their transparency and are less reflective since the scratches give them sort of a flat finish. (though transient reflections are as likely to attract as repel fish)

Comfort, Power and manueverability: I often swim long distances on the surface in very cold water and against waves/wind. I also take pictures along a breakwall in relatively close quarters. These fins have a great balance of power and softness. They are easy to swim and maneuver with and have a very nice, even return on kicks. For diving to around 15-20 meters they are great. I wouldn't call them deep fins - for that you may want more power - but they are superbly balanced, efficient and comfortable.

I also own a pair of Millenium Runners. These are just about exactly 2 and one half times stiffer than the ice fins. They are made with the same polymer - but in Black. It's amazing because the personality of the blade - in terms of how it feels to swim with them, is exactly the same as the ice fins - just stiffer. They both have a very even, precise return. I've used Cressi Gara's and Sporasub HDs and the Ice fins are far and away the most comfortable fins I've used.

The perceived movement issue is what really sells me on their transparency. The runners are well worth a look too - if you don't want to spring for the Ice fins right now. You could allways pick up the blades later and switch them out.

There's loads of posts on Ice fins and I've read most of them. I can't remember anyone who actually ownes a pair saying anything other than good things about them.

I bought some and I think they are great fins. Excellent on the surface and good to medium depths. They are also tough mothers and take a lot more abuse than most fins. My buddies all say they're invisible in water and it is kinda wierd to see someone swimming with apparently no fins.

Never seen them "flash" and not heard that before. Personally I doubt it. Masks can go silver due to refracted light but can't see how the physics of that would wotk on a thin blade.

Only down side I've seen is the US price. Paid £70 for mine (about $150) but although the European internet suppliers quote that sort of price the carriage (or is it a tax issue?) seems to make the US price another $100.

wow thanks fondueset for all the writeup on it, you too Dave,i guess after hearing all that im pretty much sold, although i do like the idea of the runners too...i guess i will have to see what im willing to spend, thanks for everyhting

Personally, I've never really noticed the flash so it's probably a negligible effect. Nice fins, but definitely not good for deep diving... especially up here with a 7mm wetsuit & a full weightbelt! :head Great if you're doing shallower stuff, lots of surface swimming, and/or warm water diving.

Thanks Fuzz see what you mean. Never seen that myself. Wonder if it's the strong light conditions or even a camera thing.

LOL - the water temp here is 3c I'm using a 6 mil suit and diving to around 15 meters right now. It does take a little more to get going down than my 5 mil - but I don't particularly want to add any weight - currently neutral at about 5 or 6 m. No problem getting off the bottom though.

I'm in the market for a new pair of fins and like what I hear about the Omer Ice's

One question what size foot pocket should I get, I have size 8 feet and will be wearing them with Omer 3mm booties.

I wear and 11 (usa) and use 44-46 Omer's with 5 mil boots if that helps
 
I have size 8-9 (UK) feet and use 42-44 Omers with 2mm socks.

That's where I got mine, very helpful and very good service. They even put up with me phoning several times to ask various questions about fins!

the only question i have about those is, yes they are cheaper than i have found them before, but can they ship to the states, and is it possible to pay in dollars, or how does something like that work becasue ive always gotten my stuff in here in the states

As I said above I've seen this issue arise before. Lots of euro companies will ship to the US but there seems to be some issues on carriage/tax. I think spaghetti found some Italian prices even cheaper but again there was the shipping issue. Can't remember who was asking but I think $250 US was the best price he could get Stateside. Think US agent Mark Labocetta replied on that thread to the fact that he provided full back up in the States etc etc. Got my fins from Scubaland France SCUBALAND Magasin d'équipement et matériel de plongée sous-marine vente en ligne sécurisée and they ship to US but as previously mentiopned price was about $150 for the fins plus $100 nshipping.

In the states you have to get Omer Stuff through Mark Labocetta via usa shops. He's the exclusive distributor for the US. I believe it may be illegal for euro shops to sell omer directly to customers in the states. This was my experience trying to get a cobra through subprof anyway.

You also need to figure in shipping and warranty. If you get it overseas you have to ship it overseas to get the warranty honored.
 
Email them first to see how much the shipping is. The credit card company will charge your account in dollars and pay Apnea in sterling automatically

I have a pair of Picasso Blacks that I find a tad soft - any experience with them that you could compare by?
Great to see that freshwater diving isn't all logs and mud btw. Always fun to see someone else's perspectives - thanks for the opportunity!
