Hi All,

I own an Omer Shardana and after only the second dive it had started to take on water :head, this was bought from Subprof mail order to UK and cost me in total £100. I have emailed them many a time but they want me to send the float back to them which is going to cost more because it has taken on a fair bit of water!

Does anyone either have a contact for Omer where they speak English or a solution for fixing the float?

It is solid red plastic in construction.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Ryan

Do you have any idea where the water is coming in from?

Unfortunately not at the moment - I was thinking maybe drill into it a few times to empty it and then fill with expending foam...?

hi ryan, I tried contacting omer myself only to be told that i would have to go through an official distributor which i think is Apnea for the uk, but as you didnt purchase the float from them i would be supprised if they will help you. you will most likely have to sent it back to subprof but if its a manufacturing fault they may refund the postage?

If you submerge the float you might see air bubbles emerging?
The problem with expanding foam is that as soon as it has an exposed edge, like where you cut off the excess from the filling points, it will absorb water like a sponge!

The only other thing was kind of a plug sort of system to drain it out and semi - permanent seal once all the water is out... But I wouldn't know where to start.

I tried that line Scott but they are just saying no they do not pay P&P!

It will be the last time I buy anything from abroard over the internet anyway!

Don't worry mate we can fix it - you need to find the leak first.
If it was in my hands I could find it by slightly pressurising the float & putting it underwater - do you have any really practical friends that might help?
Perhaps you can take it to a dive shop & ask for help to find the leak.

I am fairly practical, I could find the leak but then how would I release the water and re-seal the leak? - As a sealed unit I would need to put another hole in and seal that too.

What sort of adhesive could I use? And could I patch it up with another thin piece of plastic?

Sorry for all the questions!

Try PM-ing Mark Laboccetta on here - he's an OMER rep in the US and a damn nice guy as well. I'm sure he could point you in the right direction to get this sorted.

I've never even been spearfishing before..
But couldnt you put it into the bath (Submerged) find the bubbles (leak) take it out, and before you cover it up, leave it in the boiler room, airing cuboard and then cover it up in the morning with ducttape or something?

Cover it in flour and find the wet bit.

It has another application that too, can't remember what now

I had water in mine. In fact it froze and there was ice rattling around in there. It was a very slow leak however and I've never fixed it. My plan was to get one of those expandable plugs used in boats, drill a hole and just drain it as needed.

I think Mark Labocetta actually filled his with expanding foam to increase the flotation - which would be another solution. Contacting him is a good idea.

Its the plastic/polyethylene float right?
once you have found the leak you can use a soldering iron and some 'spare' material e.g. like from a sot kayak cut-out (or many similar plastics) and you should be able to weld the plastic into the float where the hole is. if you 'stir' the weld then you can make it better than new :) this is how they fix sot kayaks and i've done it on a kayak i used to have (so it must be easy :) )
