Ok...so i decided i need a very short gun! more like a pistol......
Im thinking omer tempest 40.....does anyone heve any experience with this gun? Its going to be used in weed beds at close range..... maybe with a trident head if possible....
thanks
ben

Personally I believe a gun this short would be better suited for fishing in holes. Plus using a trident affects the the hydronamics of the spear and shooting through weed you have more chance of tangling before you hit a fish. If viz is a problem I would use a 75cm rubber gun or if air guns are your thing then go for a 70cm gun without a trident.

Thanks for the reply,

No vis isn't the issue....its that im hunting in water no more than 6ft pulling myself through thick weed beds even with my 75 band gun i often find that a fish apears in a shallow gully beneath the middle of the gun barrel. There would be no way of lining up the 75 with a fish in these conditions. I do agree about the trident though...something i hadn't thought of....

Do you have any experience of power or reliability of the tempest 40?
it realy would be a second gun after my 75 spetton velos or my gabianno 90 that would get used when conditions dictated.

I have only used Omer rubber guns which have been fantastic. One of the forum members here is Mark Laboccetta who is USA Omer rep so maybe he can enlighten you further. The only airgun I have hunting experience is the Sporasub Rafal 70; I'm a rubber man really :) If you try fishing in a different style i.e. lying in ambush (aspetto) you might get on with your 75cm gun better.

Gas guns are measured differently to rubber guns (overall length as against barrel length) so a 40 gas gun is VERY short, and very limited in power and range, Personally I never use gas guns shorter than 60cm, (and even a 70 is usable in pretty much zero viz)
In the weed, try holding the gun underneath you, with the handle near your waist. Sometimes for very close shots it is best to use a reverse grip on the top of the handle, and pull the trigger with your thumb (this is also useful for hole fishing)

Hi, I have a Tempest 50 and a Sporasub Rafal 42. They're powerful but, as Dave and Spaniard told you, they have a very short shooting range. However, I think every spearo should have a short pneumo like this hanging under his float, ready for use if you find something interesting in holes: for me, no gun is better than a very short pneumatic for cave hunting purposes.
I use the 50 or the 42 only with 4 prongs trident and almost exclusively for cave fish (from sargo to conger et cetera), or eventually for a powerful second shot to finish a grouper in hole.
It's also interesting your idea of using it in weed bushes, but due to its short range, you must get very close to the fish. And this requires two necessary conditions: fish must be confident to let you get so close, and/or you must have a very good "aquaticity" (smooth movements, no noise, no splashing, etc).
ciao

Spaghetti,

In answer to your question.......sure im getting really close to the fish, less that 1m often. I pull myself through the weed and there they are lying in a gully often directly below the middle of my 75.

Can i ask how many shots you get out of a tempest 50 on a full charge of air?
What would you think is the maximum range for your 50?

thanks
ben

Pneumatic spearguns are not like prechaged air rifles in that you only only get a set number of shots per reservoir fill. With a pneumatic speargun once the gun is charged, by manually pumping usually, you have all the shots you need and only need to top it up now and again. You can also use a special adaptor and fill from a dive bottle like you would do with a pre-charged air rifle.

Max reliable range of a 50cm gas gun with a trident is something under a metre, with a single point maybe just over a metre (from the tip of the gun)
Gas guns work on the same principle as a gas shock absorber in a car. They are a sealed unit with the compressed air acting as a spring. when you push the spear down the barrel, it pushes a piston back and further compresses the air. There is no loss of gas on firing (well maybe a tiny bit due to O ring leakage, but I have gas guns that have been regularly used for 5 years with no pumping and no apparent loss of power)

Ahhh...bit like some gas ram air rifles then.....
I was beginning to wonder how such a small gun could potentially store enough air for any more than a handfull of shots. So, is the rear of the spear pushed by a column of water or by the piston itself? I have tried looking on the web but cant find an internals diagram anywhere.

Anyone else found a use for such a small gun in the uk?

I use a mares Cyrano 700 and i dive in poor vis. I dont see how anyone would need a smaller one. Its extremely maneuverable and light in the water too. Its a canon when you pump it up also.

look how poor the vis is. Half of my body disappears in the water
I think it could be your technique but id be guessing.

I hope this helped.

Mate, of course I didn't mean to discuss your personal skills. I just marked a technical issue (short range=close shot, as Dave and Spaniard said correctly). But if you can get 1 meter from a fish without scaring him, this is a great thing and I consider you as a very good spearo. So finally yes, you can have fun with such a short gun in some specific hunting situations, rock and hole, but also weed.

--Going technical, let me share some tips with all the forum guys. A very short airgun (40 or 50cm) in the weed is a technique that here in my country is used in several situations, both in sea and also in lakes.
In order to perform it, you need a perfectly neutral weight set, so that you can stay comfortably above the bottom while you watch through the weed with a lamp (through the weed, not from above). Neutral weight is the most important aspect: if you're too much negative or too much positively buoyant, you'll have to make movements and vibrations to keep the position, with all the downisides of the case.
SHORT IS BEAUTIFUL!

Hi, I have a Mares mini mini (it is the similar size to the tempest 40), the gun is only ever used in 2 situations(an emergency 2nd shot) and low vis conditions when i am mucking around and trying to make things more challenging.(often with no fins and in shallow water).
some points to note.

*the gun has a accurate range of a bit over a meter.

*the spear tips that come with these guns are CRAP!!, they are way to fat and their penetrating ability is very poor.

*if going for a single point head attachment, then get a very thin one or get a longer 7mm speed spear.

*I dont know if you have these where you are but "Pranger" or "Cluster heads"(very popular ins Australia) are great on these guns, and would stand up to hitting the rocks a lot better than a trident.

This gun is not very useful in most spearfishing conditions, but if setup right i am sure it would go well in the conditions you are faced with.

Hi All. I always used pneumatic guns for more than 20 years of time. I’ve lost my last one (it was 110cm long) and now wanted something not too long more maneuverable for short distance hunting (grass and low vis). Ordered CRESSI SL/50 from scubastore.com but it was unavailable for too long time. Decided get CRESSI SL/70 instead. After gun was delivered (two days from ordered) first time tried it with “SPORASUB 5 PRONGS” tip. Gun works perfectly on distance up to 3-3.5 m from the mask to the target (2-1.5m from tip to the target). Larger fish gun kills instantly (if fish shoot in the head), smaller (less than 1 kg) cracks in two pieces. Above 2 m spear looses speed and trends down (with 5 PRONGS tip!) Tried later with single tip and better vis. Shoot mullet http://www.scubaboard.com/gallery/data/500/Fish_-_Fringe_Lip_Mullet.jpg from about distance 1.5m from the tip to the fish. Spear cracked fish in two pieces and it kept move forward until it hits the rock. Stainless still tip cracked in two pieces in the middle - http://www.scubastore.com/product.asp?pais=Ireland,%20Republic%20Of&idioma=eng&id_familia=6&id_subfamilia=21&id_modelo=3882&id=21&marca=SEAC-SUB&desde=0&fromhbx=subfamilia (good tip but bit too weak for the rocks), bent spear. Assumption: CRESSI SL/70 is very powerful gun and same time very maneuverable. It’s not a best design, but it very good value for money. I’m glad now that I’ve got SL/70 instead of SL/50. Extra length gives me extra 20 cm when I’m trying to reach target and extra energy to the spear. But most of the hunters from country where I’m from originally (Russia) use short and very short guns
