Hi guys. Almost 2 moths ago I came to Miami from NY. I used to practice in the pool because of the NY weather. Miami has a nice weather and don't feel like practicing anymore in pool. How do you freedive in open water? Is there more risks with this? Sharks or something? I'm not sure where to start and where to freedive here in Miami beach.

Any ideas are really appreciated.

i think martin stepanek lives in miami, so im sure there are a number of freedivers there in miami that do some open water diving, that would be glad to help you out. If you dont get in contact with them tho, i would suggest finding SOMEONe to dive with, and get a boat and simply go out and dive. i wouldnt worry too much about sharks, although it can still be scary at times
have fun diving

Thanks Rory. Hmm, I don't have a boat but I'll talk with people around here. I remember that once I went to Pennsylvania and dove in dutch springs; I thinks that is the name of the lake. There were ropes and diving underwater was very easy, although the water was very cold even near summer for me.

Maybe I'll do some dynamic apnea and every once in a while I'll try to dive in the ocean. Another thing I might need to do is enroll in a freediving course with Kirk Krack to get some extra tips.

Thanks, your info is appreciated buddy.

Robby,

Look around this forum for members from Miami; there are quite a few. There is some interesting beach diving there. The North Jetty at the south end of Miami Beach is a good free dive spot. Very interesting and some very big fish, mostly not the spearing variety. Try a day with two or three days of calm weath previous, and go at high tide, current change 1 hour 45 minutes after official high. Be careful of the tip, current sweeps perpendicular to the jetty. Also try Cape Florida and under the Virginia Key Bridge, lots of snook, etc. Note, check the regs, some of this may no longer be legal. Try Austin's Dive shop for more info.

Kirks course is outstanding, a 'must do' if it is available.

Thanks I'll check out Austin's dive shop Connor. I just enrolled to a good gym with a decent pool, called LA Fitness. 25 yards long and is heated. I have found very beneficial apnea in the pool and weights ;it keeps me in great shape. Especially now that I'll be working here in south beach in a bar, so I better be in shape :0)
