Packing air (gulping) and nausea

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.

Hey, I was wondering if there is a link between Packing air and naushea.
The other day I was runnig trough a o2 tabell and later that evening I was adjusting the strops on my masks,when I thought I would try Packing
Usually when I try this I end opp leaking air out trough my nose,but here I was wearing my mask and sqweesing my nose.It worked fine and I keept the extra air inn.. held it for 20 seks just to gfeel it. and let go.. and went on with my evening..
Then later(20-30 minutes) I started getting a bit nausheaus,and ended up really feeling sick for about 2 hours.. I have never been that sick before,so I m guessing it was the packing ??
Any advises for me ?

I newer hear of packing and then get sick after 30min... really... maybe you can tell us more about that nausea?
 
Im just thinking about it since the diafgram(?) is in the gut, and thats where I felt sick
Altso I have never been this nausheus before.. So it was kinda strange.
 
The only explanation I can think of is that you were swallowing air. That can cause nausea.
 
How do I know if im swallowing air ?
I didnt feel bloated or burping afterward..
 
If you didn't feel bloated or burping, it may not have been caused by swallowing air. I can't think of anything else. :confused:
 
Most likely cause is swallowing air as naiad says.

Another possible reason, if you were packing really hard, is that you have done some damage to your ears which can make you feel wobbly and seasick. This normally resolves itself if you give it a rest for a while - you sometimes get the same thing from equalising too hard.

If You want to use packing, you might want to work on Your concious control over Your epiglottis and soft palate. When packing, You should be able to hold the air in by keeping Your epiglottis closed (where Your vocal cords are) Instead of having to pinch Your nose and keeping Your mouth closed/blocked by the tongue. Can You apply the frenzel technique for equalisation? That is usually a good way of practising one's control over the muscles in one's head. :)

Are You diving at a level that requires packing or do You just want to play around with it? And, just to make sure: You are aware that You can hurt Your lungs badly when packing too hard?

Im a beginner, with downtime around a minute, have been to a UV freediver course. and the trainer advised us to airpack for longer bottom time...But I dont do it..just experimenting on land kinda..
but when I try to pack. it comes out my nose if i dont pinch it. ?
So I guess more training is required.
 
I am surprised that you were advised as a beginner to pack for longer bottom time. Packing is an advanced technique and not recommended for beginners. There are lots of other ways to improve apnea performance, such as tables. There is lots of info on this thread. :)
 
Packing may be quite dangerous for several reasons, and won't necessarily lead to a longer bottom time. Often, the exact opposite may be true. Your freediving instructor was probably not very experienced. Packing, if necessary, should be employed only by advanced freediving competitors in a safe and controlled environment. Packing poses many risks - direct lung injury (like for example pneumomediastinum), risk of embolism, increased lung squeeze probability, barotrauma, blackout in the initial phase of the dive, suppression/delaying of the proper diving response, increased heart rate (hence possibly higher O2 consumption and earlier possibility of blackout), etc. The risks of packing were discussed in many threads here on DB - for example in this one: http://forums.deeperblue.net/beginner-freediving/70629-letting-air-out.html

The worst is when packing is combined with hyperventilation, which is unfortunately more than common at beginners - the risk of an accident then increases considerably.
