Hello amphibians,

I know a lot has been written about packing but lately I've realised that I have lot more comfortable depth dives unpacked rather then packed. When I pack (50% of max) and I dive I have somehow too much air and I feel like I can't compress my chest so well when descending. When I dive to the bottom of cca 53-55 m 4C degree dark quarry I can do it unpacked rather than packed. When I am packed I can't equalise so easy and hold my mouth fill so easy. Isn't it strange? Does any of you experienced something like this? I like dives without packing, but I am not sure how deep I can go without packing? Did Eric F. packed when he made 100 m CWT this year finally?

Thanks for sharing your experience :t

Diving on a full inhale is much safer and also more comfortable than diving with packing. If you can equalize on a full inhale, you don't gain that much depth with packing. I did pack on my 100m dive but not max at all.

When diving for fun I mostly do either full inhale or FRC+2L.

I find that packing is far more comfortable than a full inhale. But maybe I'm just weird.

Thank you for your answers. Eric, how many packs from your max (50?) pakcs did you do? I heard that Umberto Pelizzari doesn't pack at all even when diving to 100+ meters, but as far as I know he even doesn't use mouth fill. Only one way I could imagine is that he does some kind of reverse packs, but it's not the way I would choose. :).

On my 100m I packed about half of the max I could pack (or about 8.5L instead of 10L). This made equalizing more difficult.

Davide Carrera did his 99m CWT dive at VB 2009 with a mask and no packing and no mouthfill. Same as Pelizzari.

With enough practice, anything is possible without packing. Keep in mind Davide spearfishes for a living 5-6h per day, 5-6 days per week, for years and years.

A lot of hours and then it will come. Davide Carrera has improved quite well, too. Thanks for sharing :)
