Diver's butt cut open

Diver's behind sliced by propeller
Monday, June 22, 2009
Wounded: Pete Mills A diver suffered a horror injury when a speed boat propeller sliced off a chunk of his buttocks.
Pete Mills was diving for scallops in Plymouth Sound when the 5.4m (18ft) boat ran over him.

The 24-year-old from Plymouth suffered a 20cm (8in) deep wound to his left buttock, which needed 20 staples to seal it.

20cms! Is this big fella on DeeperBlue? He must be a thick set lad to have a slice that deep and still have a leg. Get well soon either way.

Thanks for that. I figured it would have shown up here somewhere but didn't see it in searches and don't check that forum.

Not sure is would class myself as "thick set" but it went in at an angle just missing the bone. Very painful and still very sore!!

There is nothing worse than a day out spearing than finding a boat has driven right up your a***!

Get back to the water soon Pete:)
Best

well i am currently using this a good excuse to spend hours dreling over spearing porn and an even better excuse to get a new suit :)

i just hope im not stuck on land for the hole summer season!

Thanks for the support guys :)

Glad to hear you're alright Tong! Amazing that you got away with such a deep cut near some really important bits

These motorboats are real pain in the ass. Someone should invent a boat shield just like they invented the shark shield or we will start using powerheads to fight them

Hey Tong

At least you know your ass won't look fat in your new wetsuitrofl

Hope it heals quickly with no complications!

Geezus, close call. I witnessed a prop hit once and it was quite traumatic to see, let alone be on the end of (pun intended Tong).
Nail the prick is all I can say.

I've already downloaded the pic and sent it and the basic story (with links to your article and DB) to most of my mates - spearos and boat owners.

Graphic for sure but it gets the message across!

get well soon and good luck with your recovery!

from my experience in Australia speed boats are the number one danger for freedivers and spearfishers - far more than sharks or blackout. I hope the person responsible is held accountable and an appropriate message sent to the boating community in your area.... not too dismiss your injury by any means, but you are lucky in a way - a head injury could be far worse. There was a terrible accident a few years ago in Sydney resulting in very serious injuries for a competition spearo.

I just read the full article, and the comments too..... interesting. Dude! u are lucky! :)

Its good you had a dive board with flag - at least so you are absolved of any responsibility. Its a shame so many boat drivers are unfamiliar with the meaning of bouys, flags and markers. On any given weekend on Sydney harbour, or any neighbouring harbour, the average boat driver sees a bouy or flag as a point of interest - as in something to investigate by driving full speed towards and doing donuts around it! in complete disregard of the distance restrictions.....

as one person commented on your article: boat drivers are given far more freedeom of movement than a car driver - its the least they can do to respect that privilege.
