Has anyone been up to the UP in Michigan on lake Superior to painted rock?

I have seen some photos from there and WOW:inlove

And is there anything to harvest up there worth eating? If is it legal... I am getting board in the midwest!

If your talking about Pictured Rock National Sea Shore, right outside of Munising, it's a beautiful spot with some shallow shipwrecks and great sea kayaking. The water is clear, yet cold, and it hasn't been attacked by zebra mussels yet. There are also some nice campgrounds along the coast.

There is NO spearing speak of in the area. Both Michigan's spearing laws, and the lack of prey in that area, would exclude this. There are a bunch of wrecks that would be easy enough to freedive on.

Thanks bro sounds like a great place to go and free dive and snorkel with a float.

Bummer about the whole fish and spearing thing though. Thanks again for the info. I will post up before I go to see if anyone wants to meet up.

Sounds like your free dive weekend was a hit. I wish I would have noticed it before hand I would have come in a heart beat!

It's on my list. Also let me know if you want to join my legalize salmon, burbot, drum, shad, whitefish for freedive spearing campaign

You can ask Chris about the spearing regs, but I think it's only rough fish up there- and chris, Drum are normally considred roguh fish over hear from what somce scientists have led me to believe when we shoot them.

As far as not shooting up there it's more a matter of no carp to be shot as the water is to clean and deep to normally find any.

Carp, suckers, gar and bowfin.... Laws for a speargun way more restrictive than for hand-spear or bow even. When I get home I'll provide some of my dialogue with the dnr.

thanks dude-

I have a pole spear with a bungee on the back of it. Maybe I can use that??? Anyway you guys are being more then helpfull.

Burbot, drum, gizzard shad (not sure if it's the one you meant) are all rough fish, at least according to WDNR.
I'm not sure about whitefish and what kind of fish exactly you mean by that

p.s. I'm all for trying to change current fishing regulations. It'd be nice to be able to shoot a game fish once in a while

I know - it's bad here. A pole spear with a band is still 'a rubber propelled spear' by Mich regs...

I wonder what shad taste like. They sure look edible.

they taste like CHICKEN!roflProbably not bad fried - everything is better fried!

Damn - so if I take off the bungee then I can poke 'em?

Hey Jon (or others)-
Is there a store in the midwest that sells freediving equip? Or are you guys all doing the internet thing. I would love to get a new wetsuit but hate the trial and error and shipping crap with overseas suits.

It's all internet. I tried to get a local shop to open up, but they couldn't sell enough to make it worth while.
