Anyone have any experence with designing/building/using a paravane for freediving. I'm wanting to build something to be towed behind a boat at low speed allowing diving to 10-15m.

I built one years ago, 5/8 inch ply about 2.5 x 1.5 ft, aluminum tube handles, cut out in the back of the board so you could see down and ahead. ugly but effective. Worked very well planeing to about 8 meters. Deeper would also work, but you need a loonnnngg tow rope. Bigger is better for depth. We towed for miles every day, commercial spearing, mostly staying about 4 m under the surface. Main problems you run into are visibility around the board, tow rope too short, and the drag wearing out your arms. I built my handles so you could hang your elbows in them and take the strain off your muscles. Getting the thing balanced while towing takes some experimentation. This would be particularly important for going deep.

Do you happen to have any photographs?

Wondering about where to put pivot points and if handles should go inside vanes or outside etc.

Thanks

Phil
