partial exhale downtime

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.

At the end of my swims I'll do the occasional bit of downtime via partial exhale-so as to sit on the bottom w/o weight belt. I've been able to do in excess of 2.5 min with no worries. This surprises me somewhat as my max downtime spearing has been 3min, but here I am with much less 02 and not at depth(which to my understanding helps to perfuse tissue). Is the energy exerted getting down and up the telling factor here? What times divers achieving with partial exhale and reduced bouyancy relative to full inhalation(even packing)? This is what seals do, no?

Moving around does make a big difference to downtime, so that is probably an important factor.

Yes, I second Naiad - performing statics at the bottom of a pool is extremely dangerous. At exhale statics it may be even worse. Asking the pool life guard to look after you is definitely not sufficient. Read for example about the death of the Swedish freediver who did exactly that:

And he is definitely not the first who died in this way. When training wet statics, you need to have redundant security in place. Just telling someone you are the bottom is worse than nothing, and even having someone surveying you from the surface is insufficient in such case, because he/she may not realize you blacked out soon enough.

Otherwise, at exhale apneas, the Diving Reflex kicks in much quicker and stronger, so if you are used to do it, you can indeed achieve nice performances. Look up posts of Sebastien Murat who is the pioneer of FRC diving, and dove in this way to ~80m unassisted (no fins), and over 100m in no limits.
