Hi Richard and Bill,
Attached are two images. The first is of the data on WSB otolith morpholgy or weight vs the age of the fish. The otolith weight (mass) is a better predictor of age than any measurements taken on the otolith. This info will be part of the paper on age and growth of WSB that I'll be submitting so I ask that you please not post this image on your website until after the paper has been accepted for publication. The other image is of a sectioned sagittal otolith from a 8.77 year old known-age WSB. I placed yellow dots on the image so you can see the annuli (rings) that are counted. They're pretty obvious when the otoliths are prepared in the manner that we have worked out. We would section the otolith from Bill's fish in the same manner and include it in our analysis of this study. I would also send you a picture of the otolith similar to the one attached.
Bill, can you send me a photo of the picture you mentioned to me over the phone showing the length of the fish and the tape measure? I would also like to stop by Lyons and O'Haver to check out the mold of your WSB and look at the insides of the fish that they removed to determine the sex. As I mentioned on the phone I live about 5 min from their factory. Do you have a contact there? Also I was wondering if you had any plans for the guts? One of the next studies that we are planning is to determine when WSB become sexually mature and their fecundity. This type of work involves collecting gonads from various sizes and sexes of WSB. The gonads from your fish would also be a valuable contribution to this study.
Thanks,
-Mike

Hi Richard,
My apologies for the laggard response but I was in Mexico most of last week and only now am I catching up on my emails.
We did receive the poster and other items that you sent. Thanks for sending those along.
The two white seabass fishing tournaments that we discussed over the phone are happening in May. The first one is the Western Outdoor News/Yamaha tournament on May 17-18 at Catalina Island. The contact for this event is Kit McNair kit@wonews.com I can’t find a website with specific info on this event.
The other event happening in May is a spearfishing tournament on Memorial Day weekend. You can read the specifics of this event at http://www.sandiegofreedivers.com/jack.html
I have also attached a recent paper that I co-authored about white seabass.
As we discussed on the phone I am also completing a manuscript on age and growth of white seabass (wsb). The largest wsb that we aged in this study was about 84 pounds. This fish was also speared back in November 2005 but the guy who speared it didn’t think it was a world record at that time. Anyways I would like to include in this paper, if possible, an age estimate from the fish that Bill speared. However this would require one otolith from his fish that we would need to section to make the age estimate. If Bill was willing to part with one otolith, which would ever be immortalized in the paper from this study, it would be a very valuable contribution to this work and our knowledge of wsb. I haven’t spoken to Bill yet but I would be interested to see if he would consider this donation.
You can also find more info about the aquaculture and work that we do regarding wsb at the link below.

Hi Mike
I talked with Bill Ernst last night about you and the WSB program. He said that he will call you today or tomorrow.
What did you think of the WSB poster ? Bill and I came up with an idea with the posters for you. We also think that you really should have the World Record, up on your wall, to show everyone what they can grow to !!
Did you have a chance to get all the new reports and info on the WSB to send us ? We look forward to seeing it and putting it up on our site.
Take care.
