Hi all here at DB, I just had to write about my newest accomplishment. On Thursday i went for my 1st proper training session with a club called The Lazy Seals Freediving Club here in Wellington NZ and beat my personal best dynamic with fins which was 50 metres and was able to get to approx 58 metres - the pool is 33 metres in length which is slightly different to the 25 metres i am used to training in so my next mission is to make the 66 metres which i reckon i can do - I am gaining more and more faith in myself and my abilities as i move forward with these small accomplishments and i have to say i am pretty proud of myself for getting to the point i am at.

Congrats, Aquagurl! I myself had some progress on Weds night.... I go to a HUGE 25m indoor pool weekly, to work on my technique, and things were going so well, I decided to swim a dynamic, with the goal being to beat my PB of 50m. I did 65m. I was VERY happy. :D Next week, I WILL hit 75m!

Todd

Hi Aquagurl,

Yeah It's awesome that buzz you get when you set a PB, you ride that high for weeks afterwards. That's what I love about this sport, and as you say , building faith in youself and in your abilities.

Congrat on getting to 58m.
Great you have a target of 66m. I can recommend breaking the dive up
into parts, and not thinking of the whole dive at once. Do it steps.
And your in good hands with the Lazy seals club, very experienced divers to learn off. Very Friendly bunch.

Aquagurl, congrats to you. That feeling of pushing to your limits while under the protection of experienced and caring tutelage is so important. A real confidence builder that will have effects beyond the water!

We are all proud of hearing about your accomplishment. It reminds many of us of the exact same challenge/accomplishment - or wise "pull back" :) edge we all visit no matter our skill or yr's of experience. In fact I'd venture to say you've hit the pearl!

Thanks everyone for your words of support and encouragement and Good Luck Todd for conquering 75 :)

Thanks Aquagurl! I'm going for it on Monday night, and I have a REALLY good feeling about it!

Todd

Firstofall: Congrats! :king

Comes to mind that I read a tip somewhere: If You're going beyond a full number of lengths, it helps to do the odd end at the beginning of the dive. So in a 25m pool, when attempting 58m, You'd do 8m first, and then two full lanes, so as to avoid a turn on the last meters.
Since reading this, I haven't had a spotter, so I couldn't try it out.
Have You tried this? And - if so - does this trick work for You better than adding the odd bit in the end?

And another quick question: Was that 58m with or without fins?

Cheers,

I would suggest to you guys, and anyone - that setting goals is great, but don't get fixated by round numbers. A few people have gone off the rails heading for a round number (usually co-inciding with completing a lap), say for example 100m, when their limit is 96m.

By all means, go for it - but let your body tell you what your goal is, not the pool, or the rope length.

Cheers,
Ben

Oh, definitely - no worries there. :)
I'm not much of a number guy in this. The question is just about a psychological aspect of doing dynamics.
And this trick would even allow me to do 96 and finish at the end of the lane. ;) - If I ever were to even attempt 96 meters, that is :t

Yeah, for me, the wall is the short-term goal. The fact that it happens to be the 75m mark is beside the point. Right now, it's just what I'm aiming for. And, once I get there, the next goal will be 100m! And, I'll get there when I get there. :D

Todd

I would recommend always adding two metres to each goal. Go for 52m or 78m or 102m. Making that turn makes it more likely that you won't develop a psychological block at the wall. It also makes it more likely that you won't run out of air at the wall because of being so fixated (not that you are but I have seen others have been) if you practice always making the turn - you should know if you have the air for the turn (with practice). And if you're practicing 25m technique lengths, which I highly recommend, you should always make the turn so that it's automatic.

My 2 cents. :)

Thankyou for all of the advice. I realise now that i confused people a little with my 1st post on this. I will explain...i usually train twice a week in a 25 metre pool and can now reasonably easily do a 50 metre dynamic with fins but when i went for my 1st training session with the club it was in a 33 metre pool so what i did was do one length and turn and see how far i could get which is how i got to the 58 metre (approx) mark. I said i was gonna go for the 66 metre mark (in the 33 metre pool) because yeah i guess to be honest i want to make two full lengths of that pool. However when i am training in the 25 metre pool i would like to be able to do three full lengths of that pool if that makes sense. At the moment i am using the wall as a kind of goal and will keep pushing myself even if i only make it a few extra metres each time. At about the 40 metre mark though i get that swallowing reflex kicking in and have to work on getting through that to get further. I am also working on my no fins technique because i am very bad at that one and needs lots of help and i also haven't attemped a static yet but that will come next and i am looking forward to it in a way to see how long i can actually hold my breath for. Hey Divertodd - how did you go with your 75 m attempt? I am training today at the 25 m pool and then again tonight with the club at the 33 metre pool so hopefully i will have a progress report tomorrow.

And thanks Laminar for your advice about the turn, it definetely makes sense to always do that and i will take that on board.

Congrats!

My pb uptade ;)

This sunday at the pool I set my pb of 50m without fins wooot!

Congrats to you too Joe, I increased my PB for dynamics with fins from 58 - 60 metres last night and am pretty pleased with that. Onwards and upwards :)

It wasn't such a great night at the pool on Mon, but I knew the deck was already stacked against me, for several reasons;

1. I had gone swimming earlier in the day, 300 yrds freestyle, and then I pushed myself through 400 yrds non-stop sidestroke (which I hadn't done in a while, and wanted to get back into it). So, I'd used up quite a bit of my "energy allotment" for the day right there. And,

2. I usually allow at least 4 hrs for digestion before I go to the big pool for freediving practice. Well, on Weds, I ate QUITE a bit (so much that I got an upset stomach and had to lie down for a bit), and a full 4 hrs hadn't passed before I got to the pool; I could still FEEL my stomach digesting. So, that kind of did me in, as well.

Also, when I got to the pool, there was a lot of activity going on, as usual, but for some reason, there was a coach there for the swim team lessons that seemed to REALLY enjoy blowing their whistle...short, LOUD bursts...constantly, and it was really digging into my concentration and relaxation. But, even on top of all of this, I still managed to do two good, solid 50m dynamics. Next week, I'll be better prepared to attempt 75m again. :)

Todd

Hi, What fins and style are you guys/gals using?

I'm just trying to get back into it, but for safety not doing anymore than 50m.
(Just me & no club where I'm based)
I was doing 50m with my small underwater hockey fins (dolpfin style) then changing over to the monofin (waterway M1 Sprit modded to med/soft) and was frustraighted it was equally as difficult, I'm limited by breathhold time is seems. 1:00-1:10, regardless of fins,
I expected it be a piece of cake.I don't feel any aching muscles or latic built-up, guess coming from uw hockey thats helped in that respect.
Did 66m awhile back (Nov), but heck that took alot of effort before christmas and took all session to Build up too, with Akl club.
Not easy to get back into after Christmas...

I'm using my Cressi Gara 3000 LDs....no monofin here. At least, not yet. I'm going to try to get more info/opinions about monofins during my Advanced PFI course in Apr, see what Kirk, Martin, and Mandy have to say about fit, brands, stiffness, etc. You know..pick the brains of the pros before I plunk down $300+! :)

Todd

I've had a try of all types of Monofins, Russian high end to carbon based monos, thought to standard Waterways.
I know what you mean.Alot to consider::confused:
-Carbon versus fiberglass?
-Having a blade angle?
This will assist if maybe you'd like too have mini glide phase after power stroke
-Want a monofin suit to both dynamic & constant weight perhaps?
or one specifically just for dynamic
-etc etc.

Will make all the difference to squeezing extra meters out.
I'd recommend trying the dolphin style (you may already do), even though your using stereo fins, it will be give you an idea of what it feels like oxygen burn wise, muscles used etc.
