Hello all,

Im Lazuli and I am about to set out on my spiritual journey into Freediving. I feel so happy to have found this forum and love the enthusiasm and sense of community that emanates from these boards.

I look forward to chatting with you all.

I am based in Devon (southwest UK) and am doing a PhD at Exeter University. Lately I have been dealing with very serious and austere subjects in my research. My mind has wandered a great deal and I often find myself having daydreams of family holidays in Gozo when I was a kid. Its as if I have been seeking some sort of escape from the pressures of study. I have had recurring dreams of holding my breath and diving to the bottom of a lagoon, the stillness and the feeling of departure from the realm above.

I recently saw a YouTube video of freediving in Dahab and knew instantly that this sport was something I had to try.

Thats how I got the bug. 12Lbs of lead, a 2 piece sharkskin wetsuit, cressi fins and a sporasub mask are now just screaming at me to get in the water and do some training. Other than this, I love ambient music, writing and hanging out in Cornwall with my mates.

best wishes to you all

Laz

Personal best: 3mins static, apnea walk: 80m

Belated welcome Lazuli. We don't have many self proclaimed dandies on the forum. I see the attraction of apnea although it has its dangers (hope you are ok now). You don't have to dive deep nor long to enjoy diving. I'm a shallow water spearo and get a great deal of enjoyment from the activity. By the end of the season, my diving has generally improved naturally, although I loose much of it again over winter (so I do a few pool snorkel sessions). A freediver on the forum recently talked about moving away from deep, long dives as he realised that he got more enjoyment & less stress from shallower dives (where much of the visible sea life is).

If your studies are consuming, you might find it better to take a less intense approach to apnea until that subsides?
