People’s Choice – Cast Your Vote for the Best AIDA Freedivers

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
The 'newcomer' award seems to have stretched a bit. Alena has been competing for nine years, Rune has already won a world championship, Antonio has been competing since '08 and Branko since '07, while I watched Matt dive back to back 100s (FIM & CWT) in 2010 at Triple Depth.

There's no doubt they're all great divers, but perhaps these people should be competing for the overall to make it a bit fairer on the actual newcomers? From the nominees, only Emila, Jody and Romain have been competing for less than 2 years. It seems strange that they're up against someone who started diving at the same time as Natalia.

Perhaps I could come out with some algorithm to pick up the best newcomer based on real data and not on popularity vote, and add it to the WAFA award. Something like the max points divided by the number of days since their first competition. I think I'll try it just for the fun to see who comes out best (probably someone who started for the first time in a competition in December) :D

That would be pretty funny! What about best performances from their first 12 months of competing - both absolute & rank? Might be a better question to ask! Could be interesting from a historical perspective as well.

I thought best newcomer would make the most sense as best results from someone who's first comp was during the year in question? Something like that, anyway.

I think it's based on the date of their registration on DB :)

ICARE Trophies use to used the name "Best Revelation" which means relatively unknown athletes who came to the top in the particular year. Have no idea why AIDA changed a category to the Best Newcomer.

Yes, I remember that. I also remember Suzy Osler winning, despite being a silver medalist in a previous world champs. Then again, her last name was different back then. Maybe Kathryn & Nikki should have been eligible again based on the same criteria?
