Hi, I've occasionally been trying to blow some nice bubble rings. But most of the time there's just a big bubble coming out of my mouth, not looking like a ring at all. What are the most common mistakes when making bubble rings? I feel like I usually take too much air in my mouth and use too much pressure to blow it out.

Its very hard to teach it, you must try different methods etc.
It dont come overnight.
First time you can do just ring with many-many bubbles, then later you can do perfect one-piece ring.
I do these almost every training session in pool :)

Try in shallow water, without any currents, hold yourself down at the stairs, wait for the water to be still, put your head backward so your mouth opening horizontal - parallel to the surface, and like Johnnybuoy said blow in a small short burst - like spitting a pip.
In the short time you blow it's important to relax the lips after spitting the pip.

Remember to round (O shape) your lips and when spitting the pip extent them out.

Make an 'oo' shape with your lips and plug the hole by sticking out your tongue a tiny bit. Then make 'spitting a grape' action with the air in your mouth while at the same time retracting the tongue.

I find the easiest way is to say "POPE". Exaggerate the "O" sound and don't use too much air! Hope this helps :)

Steps I follow:

- Shallow water best so can practice more rings at a time 3-4' where you can rest on bottom.

- Make sure there are no jets from side of pool, these will make the rings impossible where you are.

- Make sure your head is horizontal, you should be looking up right at the ceiling, try tilting head more back or forward to get better shape, need to be horizontal.

- pucker out lips like you are kissing someone who is not quite close to you.

- open mouth the size of pencil or pen, you can practice with pen or pencil on dry land to check size.

- Make the sound "toot", important to start with a "t" sound and end with a "t" sound so exagerate the "t" sounds. This starts and stops the air quickly letting the bubble ring form.

- make sure you can rest relaxed on bottom, hold onto bottom of ladder with hands or use weights (if you weights for sure use saftey partner watching). If holding on to bottom of ladder and will float up probably OK with life guard if you use common sense like only do 10 bubble ring attempts and come up. For sure if any contractions stop and go to surface immediately (is really hard to do bubble rings with contractions anyway).

Good thing he IS the pope now, I'd hate to see you trying to say Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio a few weeks back...

I say POP, or BOB, try to make it short as possible with as much air as possible. I succeded in the second attempt. To make them stable it's better to start in water as deep as possible (I usually do them in a 3m pool). And if there are swimmers around you it's gonna be very hard to get them to be stable for a long time.

In an empty swimming pool they can be in one piece till the top. And they expand very rapidly in the last 20-30 cm. They get from like 30cm diameter to almost 1m in diameter.
