For a while now I've been interested in 'exploring' underwater rather than only spearfishing. I've been wanting to take some underwater shots with my gopro etc.

For anyone who knows the Neath valley (Wales) will know 2 huge lakes on the A465. These are man made, they dug the ground out from there to use for the A465 dual carriageway when they made it, and then filled them in with water.

Over the last 15 years since they were filled the biggest of the 2 lakes has become a hotspot for jet skiers, but today I got in contact with someone who makes a few decisions on the lakes and has allowed me to use it.

The deepest part of the smallest lake is reported at 10 meters and viz around 6 to 7 meters. My biggest us of this lake will be to train and feel more comfortable in the water, testing gear and learning freediving techniques. I only have access to the smallest lake.

I just thought I'd share this with you as if anyone would ever feel like they wanted a little explore here, I could meet up with you. And ill also be sharing this with the boys interested in the Suth Wales club so we can train here

Not sure if there's fish in here or not, but I don't plan on spearfishing here as regular fishing I know is not allowed.

well done there bud shame I wasn't nearer .try and have some one with you fresh water can be deceptive .check the bottom for snags we don't wont you disappearing one day!it will be fab in the summer after the bloom.

Yeah i can't wait for the summer months it will be great for a look round. I'll start using it in May I think.

I dived a pit simular to that a few years ago on air paired up with safety cover removing snags as it was a carp fishing pit .There was zero vis I mean you couldn't see your hand on your mask 1 m down the stuff dumped in there was staggering some lethal .I felt my way around for the morning lots of spikes ,barbed wire n bit of cars to get caught in very good learning session .

Good luck with this Jaymz, hope it works out as a good place to train.
Funny how through Deeper Blue I've just found out more about 2 pieces of water I used to drive by twice a day than I did in several years of living locally!!
Good advice from Ian too.
All the best.

That is a good tip Ian. I think Dai could back me up with this one and say that these lakes luckily won't have any of that trouble. Cars cannot get there without the opening of the gate by the owner and fishing isn't allowed there as there's sod all in there :p

Although I do imagine 1 little touch of the bottom bed and I'm gonna wreck the viz !
