ive been spearfishing for 10 years now. most of the hunting i do is shallow water / rocks & caverns so i've never had to use long fins. wanted to get into bigger game so i recently bought some picasso black teams and they are extremely stiff. i know these aren't the type of fins you use to get around on the surface however, would i be better off with gara 300 lds?

thanks

It depends. How big are you? Divers with strong legs can use the black teams for everything. Those of us with less muscle can't. I have a pair, and they are way too stiff for surface swimming, but do OK for vertical dives. The 3000LDs will work well for eveything as long as your feet are fairly narrow. Omer Milleniums work well for medium width feet, and Imersion E-greens work well for those of us with wide feet.

175 lbs 5 11 relatively in good shape (PR about 20m). the footpockets on them fit fine, i just have trouble on the surface and it often feels like i am over-exerting on descent.

i have read conflicting things about the black teams and heard only good thing about the gara 3000lds ... are the gara fins better for amateur freedivers?

My guess would be that the garas will be much easier to use. That will give you more comfort, deeper dives and longer times (and more fun too)

I used a pair of black teams for many years. I liked them better than the garas becuase they have a better blade angle for surface swimming and I could get a thicker sock on with them. Since I always dive with a 3-6mm sock on this was important to me. If I were diving barefoot I might make a different choice.

One thing I noticed on the blade stiffness of the Black Team's was that it changed dramatically depending upon the water temp. Down in the islands they were quite a bit softer than when freediving under the ice.

Just my $0.02
