Hi folks,

In a couple of weeks I'll be off on a bit of a trip around Wales with the girlfriend. Should be on the road for about 3 weeks in a borrowed camper van (things could be worse, eh?). We'll be heading through Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons, but apart from that I'll be trying to steer the fun-bus as close to the coast as I can without getting it full of seawater.

Attached image shows a rough route - and it is rough... knocked it up in about 2 minutes. The coast between Llyn and Aberystwyth shouldn't be missed out - only got that loop in as we're going up to Snowdonia at that point... look I said it was rough! :p Nothing against Swansea way, either. We tend to just make it up as we go when we travel so may end up down there too. Don't pay too much attention to the arrows either... we may take the loop the opposite way yet.

As some of you may have seen in the other threads I've posted I'm a newbie when it comes to this whole freediving/spearfishing lark [see edit below] but the plan is to scrape together some bits and bobs this week, make a Hawai'ian sling and probably a polespear too and see how I get on.

Anyone fancy telling/showing this newbie a couple of spots worth trying? (I'm great at keeping secrets - promise - insert "no friends anyway" joke here) I'd be after something reasonably shallow, mind. Feel free to PM if you'd rather not plaster your favourite spots all over the board.

It'd be good to meet a few folks on the way around too. Always happy to make new friends, eat and drink together.

Looking forwards to any replies and maybe even to meeting a few of you at some point.

Cheers. :)

[edit: I've been swimming for years, surf (badly) and am generally at home in the water... it's only more recently that I've started practicing my breath-holds for spearing. I'm not a complete newcomer to the sea, just to using it in this particular way.]

Just realised how rough that map is. Didn't even hint at heading to the Gower, which I probably will. Didn't even realise that when I mentioned Swansea either. Hmm.

If you want to spear, honestly, don't mess around with a Hawaiian Sling or Pole-spear. They'll be worse than useless in Welsh waters. Just spend £60 - £75 on an entry level speargun, it will be well, well worth it!

If you'd like some info on N.Llyn spots, send me a PM :)

I had my eye on an Omer Excalibur 2000 on eBay last week but by the time postage was considered I would only have saved a small amount as compared to buying it new.

I'll have a look into getting a gun - but honestly funds are tight as it is and I'm not sure I'll be able to stretch to a gun before we go away. Maybe, but maybe not.
That being the case I'll have to take my chances with something a bit more primitive.

I'll fire off a quick PM in a few.
