If any of you get a chance to watch the segment from BBC's Planet Earth on Caves (it aired here on Animal Planet), it was absolutely amazing. They had great footage of the Mexican Cenotes - really great capture of the weird halocline visual effects. I've only read descriptions of it. To see it was another thing! It was neat to see divers run a line up close. The clips that people put up of their trips don't often show them running a line.
There were shots of glowworms (truly gross things) that lit up the ceiling of caves like a planetarium. Unbelievable.
The piece de resistance was their footage of Lechuguilla cave. I cannot believe this place exists on earth. I know people have diverse beliefs, but I personally believe in God, and watching this, I just am filled with awe.
It is a weird feeling, though, to know that these places exist but that I will never see it with my own eyes.
This isn't quite as good as the video, but check out a virtual tour of Lechuguilla: Lechuguilla Photo Map I think the program said that there are some crystals 20ft tall.
WOW. Just awesome. It's the kind of thing I just want all my family and friends to see. TV is full of junk, but every now and then, there are true gifts of beauty and I am grateful for the people who bring it to the public.
