Hi Everyone,

I'd like to share some paintings and drawings with you and get some feedback on some experiments I did last year. :)

Hold Your Breath

Two of the paintings on the site are quite large - the wide landscape ones. Unfortunately, the web doesn't do them justice! :duh

Most of my work is done in acrylic. I have done some oils but have not yet been able to take photos good enough to post online.

What is your favourite one?

Thanks!

Pete

Nice style and good work! I like the first one the best, probably because of the different colors on it and especially the flow feeling I get while watching this.

Me three. For some reason it reminds me of The Scream, freedive style.

Nice one mate.

Thanks guys, the diver descending is one of my favourites, too. :)

Great paintings, Pete! I like the monofin too, but also the red one, or the smaller paintings that look almost abstract - unfortunately the photos are too small and not really sharp to have better idea how the paintings really look like.

Thanks!

When I've finished my site revamp, I'll have them in larger formats.

Pete

I like the Whitecliff Bay one, beacuse of the feel created by the clarity, contrast, movement, water and skys.

The worst was the MIB, 'freediver rising'. Because it looks so much like an faceless dehumanised anonymous authority figure.
According to an artist I know, blue does not sell, neither do greens. Black, brown, red and yellows are the most popular colours by people who are buying a painting for in their home. I guess it fits the furniture better?

Personally I like the blue, and blue works of art. I quess we freedivers are similar in more than one way.

I'm looking forward to your next photo's. BTW you could use software like Paint Shop pro, Photoshop to enhance the photo's to bring back the vibrance of the colours and contrast.

All the best;

Kars.

I like the kelp and georgian bay ones in particular. Freediver rising stands out for me too - I like it - particularly the composition. It reminds me of Eric Fattah and makes me feel like I should get the hell out of the way :) Though It's hard for me to imagine he'd ever wimp out and use an ice mask. Seriously - the composition and content are very interesting.
Blues and greens are among my favs.

As years go by on Deeperblue you start getting to see and learn things about people that you never realised.

I didn't know you were an artist - your paintings are stunning with a lot of feeling and emotion. The one with the Monofin is my favourite, are you going to sell any of them?

Thanks for the comments, everyone. They are encouraging! :)

I am looking to paint between 4-8 paintings this Spring and Summer with the intention of selling them - if they turn out, that is. If there is interest in my current work (and there's more that I haven't posted), I might put those up for sale as well.

I hope to have my new website up in the next month or so to allow better viewing of my work online.

I appreciate your feedback!

Feel free to PM me if you have any interesting ideas that you'd like to see painted. I'm especially interested in perspectives that aren't usually painted or drawn.

Pete

Hi Pete,

Great paintings! I like the monofiner, streaming power out behind him and the diver on the surface with the mountains all around. Not sure why that one attracts, but it sure is growing on me.

About perspectives, I feel the more personal the better. We usually see the 3rd person perspective on photographs etc. Your monofinner appears to be a 2nd person perspective. When painting from a first person view it should get intresting with freedivers. Many freedivers see more inside, than outside when they experience the sea. I like an up close and personal work of art. Subjects may range from all it is what you experience in and arround the water, maybe even paint your story instead of written logbook?

About selling, I found that my best personal work grabs me and I have a hard time even giving it away to loved ones.

Much inspiration,

Kars

I absolutley love the color and flow of the kelp one. And I really like the one of the freediver floating face down. But the kelp is my favourite, they are all very beautiful though.

Pete,

Descent, Rockfish and Whytecliff are my favorites. I love the use of white in Descent. It is a surprise to me that it represents the feeling of water depth so well. I also like that the rockfish is kind of hidden in the background red murk and you have to peer into the painting to be sure you see it. Very much like it happens in real life. Only I want that Vermillion to be bigger, but only because I envision it on my table. And of coarse the Metridium-like anenomes resonate for me too! In the murky waters that I usually dive it is that hunched image in Whytecliff Bay that I am always scanning and listening for the tubular snorkle noises, to know that my Buddy is doing OK. Yes, all is fine.

Great work mate, I also like the 1st one but theyre all great work with lots of feeling and movement in them all. Amazing what it can do for your work if you have a passion in what you are trying to convey to the viewer :)

Thanks! :)

Your comments really inspire me to keep on painting!

I like painting things from a more immediate perspective:

-the kelp is based on impressions from investigating new fledgeling kelp at Whytecliff in the current (and video footage that I took)

-the Georgian Bay is based on previous adventures windsurfing and bodysurfing at my favourite beach, with a point of view with my eyes practically at water level

-the rockfish was an attempt to capture the shadows where fish hide without getting distracted by greens and blues

-the descent is an imagining of the countless times I've watched or followed Eric Fattah with his super wide custom monofin down into the depths. I was really happy with it because it came together in about an hour and the monofin seems to be in two positions at once.

In general, I like attempting perspectives that are challenging and difficult to pull off - painting the underwater experience is really challenging because it is so much different than atmospheric painting and so much of it is an internal experience. :inlove

I've also done some underwater sketching while freediving on styrene sheets with pencils. Very challenging and not very successful at first, but what was incredible about that was how much time I spent looking at my subjects (starfish, anemones, fish, etc). The act of looking for drawing or painting is a great way to learn about something. So enjoyable!

Thanks again for your comments!

Pete
