Hi there all in South Africa.

I am slowly learning bits and pieces from my own errors and by looking for anwers on DB. Loving it so far.
I have given up Scuba altogether now and doubt I will go back to it (maybe if works need done on moorings or something) now that I have got bitten by the freedive monster.
On St Helena (tiny island 2400km off the coast of angola) where I live and dive, I mostly tag along with the local Scuba crowd but none of them want to take up freediving. Thus, I am forced to explore on my own, which feels dangerous, dodgy & frustrating even.

The RMS St Helena (only ship servicing the island) will deliver me at the Cape Town harbour early May.
I will spend most of my hollidays in Pretoria though. Can anyone hook me up for a dive in a pool or dam or quarry or wherever you all dive?

Before all of you advise me to do a course... Dont pannic, I intend to do one when back in Cape Town on my way back to StH. John Daines said to contact him closer to the time. So hopefully he can sort me out.

Let me know if I need to bring my fins to Pretoria, or not bother.

Happy swimming,

Oldfather

Welcome to DB!

Yes freediving is a very addictive life affirming passion. I also used to Scuba dive, but am selling that equipment after it was not used for some years. I do not know any SA divers or organisations, but I hope with you they'll chime in on your thread here.

Maybe at home you should aim for the younger people, they are usually a bit more adventurous. Having a monofin also works wonders.

Glad you like this forum and they written contributions, I agree it's a great source for the discerning mind.

Love Courage and Water,

Kars

I would love to engage some of our younger people. Hopefully I can get on the right type of course and learn enough to safely and confidently pass on something to the youth.

Thanks Kars...

@oldfather: welcome. I just did my level 1 with John D. Excellent instructor. I am based in Randburg and am also networking to get the "highveld" free divers to congregate - to NO avail. A very secretive bunch. Sod that, let's organize a freedive day at miracle waters west of pretoria near Brits. I have tried to reach out various so-called freedive school in JHB but they clearly haven't learnt about the internet yet. Drop me a mail: stevew@mweb.co.za
