I have been interested in freediving for the last year now, completed my AIDA 2* and looking to have completed my 3* by the end of the summer. I was looking for somewhere to train in a few disciplines and a few like minded individuals to train with. My idea was to form a freediving club in Plymouth and hire a few lanes in a local pool for dynamic and static training once a week. I was then hoping that once a week (possibly weekend) we could meet to dive on the coast if the weather is good, or at New England Quarry if the weather is bad. If you would be at all interested in this idea either as a freediver or training for better spearfishing breath-hold times, please comment below and pass the message onto people you think may be interested.

Cheers,
Lewis

Hi Browner,

I saw this post a few days ago and was hoping that it would get some positive responses because i have been freediving in Brighton for about 9 months, and i was looking for a group of divers / spero’s to train with when i come home from uni to Cornwall in the summer. So i would be happy to hear how you get on setting up a club.

If its of any help my summer job is at an old flooded quarry in Cornwall and the boss is a bit crazy and could be up for letting use use his pontoon of an evening, the lake is 22-27m deep and we could easily set up a line.

Hey Diddavetellyou,

Thank you very much for your support, I too was hoping for a few more positive responses but maybe not everyone has seen the page yet. As far as freediving in cornwall goes, I know there are two great clubs to freedive with: Saltfree Cornwall and Freedive UK. I would love to few a dives with you additionally in the quarry too, if you pm me your email then when you are down for the summer we can get in contact, sound good?

Cheers for your support.

been spearfishing for a few years on and off - so would be keen for some training pool sessions to increase my time under before the season kicks off properly.

let me know if you have any sucess with others and a pool!

Hi Browner. I'll be out in the water once the viz improves. I'm going to be doing a fair bit of free diving from my kayak this year, to get out to some of the deeper reefs. I don't mind meeting up for some pure freediving, but don't be surprised if I come back with a lobster.
I work in a leisure centre in Saltash, and they sometimes have a Saturday evening for pool hire. Its a 25m pool and a shallower learner pool.I can check on availability and prices tomorrow. It's a set price for the hour, so the more people come, the cheaper it is. I might be able to get staff hire rates, but don't hold me to that.

Hey Trelawney, that sounds brilliant, if you could let me know how they would like a lane or two being hired organized that would be brilliant! And of coarse how much it would cost! Regarding a few freedives, that sounds perfect! Please pm me your email or phone number so that we can get in contact (also I don't mind if you forage some food). Martin it is also great to see your enthusiasm, keep checking this page for updates.
It is great to see some positive responses!! I hope more people are also interested, cheers!

OK. If there is a free Saturday night at the pool, it will be £16 per lane, per hour, irrespective of how many people are in it. I can probably get two lanes for that price, so it will give a bit more room for moving around with fins.
Time wise, it will be after 18:00 until 20:00, as we sometimes have kids parties in between 5-6.
If people are interested, post here and i'll see whats available to suit. Sometimes, it can be only a weeks notice of available slots.

I would be up for 7 till 8 or 6 till 7, thank you Trelanwey for researching that. Anyone else interested please post below, we need at least two other people to make this idea possible and affordable!

Browner

Cheers for the mail, I missed this. Count me in. There is also the pool at Plympton which may also be cheap. I'm easy for anywhere local though. More or less any evening suits me if I'm free.

As for quarries, I'm up for that especially if there is no hassle with owners and insurance. I have a rubber dinghy for a dive platform, window weight for the dive line, marked off dive line and leash. Apart from the dinghy all home made.

Also up for a kayak trip and I have two available should we need a spare for someone.

Keep me posted.

CR

so have you been anywhere for a pool session yet?

I'll be speaking to my boss about working and setting up a line over the Easter break in the next few days.
nice one cave_raver but the boss has some pontoons we could use as a dive platform or there is the safety boat in the water at all times for the other activities we do during the day.

i'll update you when i know more details.

We haven't been able to arrange a pool session yet, Saturday evenings are quite hard to keep free for me (due to work pestering me to do shifts). I am up for some coastal freedives or quarry dives too! If anyone on this thread knows an AIDA 4* diver/ instructor please invite them as their inclusion could be paramount for certain safety aspects.

Our pool is booked up solid on the weekends until the Autumn unfortunately.

Shame about the pool bookings. Once I'm back from holiday I'll ring round for some options.

diddavetellyou - where is the quarry you mentioned? I only ask as I used to live in Cornwall and I'm curious.

CR

Sorry for the week delay uni has been hectic.

Hi all,

I have Spoken to the boss and he is happy for us to use the quarry to do some free diving in the lake over Easter.

The site can be quite noise during the day so I would plan to do any diving after the main site is closed so in the water at 5 at the earliest with everyone out of the water before
It gets really dark. This is open to change depending on people's availability and we can have access to some flood lights and power if absolutely necessary.

My preliminary idea of how the first dive will go is;

Meet at the quarry at 1630h ish (before closing time)
Get to know each other a bit, face to a name etc.
Survey the site. I'll show you the lake, pontoon, parking, changing area etc.
Warm up; yoga, stretching, ritual sacrifice whatever people normally do.

Suit up
Swim any kit to the pontoon
Go through surface protocol together (so we're all on the same page)
A few DNY to warm up 20-25m.
Free immersion on rope to 8-10m ish (equalisation)
Possibly Free immersion on rope to 15-20m ? (Different location)
Look at dumped car 2-6m (fun)
Get Out, dried and changed
Pup across the road for debrief

if I missed anything major can you point it out for me.

Cave_raver The quarry address is:

Adrenalin Quarry
lower Clicker Rd
Menheniot
Liskeard
PL14 3PJ

Things to do in Cornwall: UK's Longest ZipWire and Coasteering in Cornwall. Things to do in Cornwall #1: visit Adrenalin Quarry

I'm a student back to work for Easter so my time table is quite flexible. I would really like an Idea of numbers and availability, so either a PM or just post replies to this message an I'll get it set up.

Excitedly

Great news, thanks for looking into this. Not far from Plymouth either. I'm in so we just need to tie down a day. Are we talking about the easter weekend or anytime from easter onwards?

I will be traveling back to cornwall on Saturday 23rd of March and starting work Sunday or Monday so ill talk to the boss in person and find a couple of dates that are good for him and post on the forum and go from there.

So any time from Tuesday 26th - about the 12th /13th April is possible but more likely after easter weekend.

At the moment I have heard from you and one other interested, a couple of others would be good for a first time maybe half a dozen.

So I went to the quarry today to have a look around and talk to he boss. Also talked to some of my mates that work there who would like to join in so thats 5 people which should be good for a first time.

The boss is happy for us to be there after hours so long as me or another member of staff is with the group to have keys and lock up etc. but if you want to come back during normal opening hours when I’m not there he’s ok with that but he won’t let any non staff have keys. He has some scuba divers every few weeks and there is a triathlon group that use it once a month.

I don’t know when i’m working yet and should find out tomorrow. I can dive after work or on my day off. So pretty much any day is good so does anyone have days they can or can’t do.

Plan for the dive is still as outlined a couple of post ago.

It gets dark at about 1830 ish
Water temp is around 10C with a thermocline (not sure how low but in the summer 16C at the surface was 8C at 8m according to some scuba divers)

I’m still keen, as are the guys I work with

I'm not free until about 18:00 Monday to Thursday but I'm around most Friday afternoons. Otherwise I'm available at weekends. The clocks change this weekend and the days are getting longer though.

I'm keen to give this a go. Post when you're going up and I'll make the effort to join you.

Just Seen this and would be very keen too. Not really done too much specific fee diving before but have speared a fair bit!. Would love to meet guys to train and share training ideas and techniques with as well as have an organised time to get in the water.

Has anything been planned?
I'm a teacher so have Easter hols free too. (ish)

Cheers.

After emailing every public pool in the Plymouth area it looks to be a no go. The Life Center seemed possible at one point but now they want insurance and club affiliation

Fingers crossed for this quarry near Liskeard.

Anyone fancy some Plymouth shore dives now the evenings are lighter?
