Hi,

I’ve been at work for the last few day and went into the quarry on Saturday to run a Coasteering session and think that diving might be a no go. The water is 4C at the surface and gets colder as you go deeper. Add to that the wind chill when your at the surface it is dangerously cold. The boss is not taking new bookings which means its bad.

I had my 5mm Xcell infinity suit, 5mm split toe surf boots and a C-skin hood but no gloves and the pain in my hands and face after only a few mins was almost unbearable. We cut the session down to about 30-35 mins and used the safety boat to get everyone out of the water asap.

This is only a temporary set back, the lake will warm up in the summer and is still warm in October/ November time so we will still be able to use it then

Some of my mates have been in the sea recently and say it feels warm by comparison so I am really keen for a shore dive around plymouth CR.

I have tomorrow, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday this week off from work so will be available whenever.

Hi Wolf_Pack,

Firstly, welcome to DB it a great place to pick up training tips.

We don’t have anything set up as yet and as you can read in my other post it is ridiculously cold. Getting in the sea is more likely at the moment but a regular slot in the summer is probably what will happen when I get back from uni for the summer.

I am approaching this from the other side; I joined a freediving club at uni and want to get into spearing, so hopefully it’ll be a 2 way passing of knowledge and information Having a regular training slot has helped my technique no end and I notice if I miss one or a few sessions.

Hoping to get in the sea with Cave_Raver over easter, Waiting for him to get back to me about time etc. You might be able to join us?

I guess you're right about the quarry water temp. I used to use a 5mm winter steamer for diving thinking it was excellent for kitesurfing but diving is a different matter and I still got cold in the winter months. I've recently bought a 7mm diving style suit. With the double layers of separate long johns and jacket I must get about 14mm and it is so warm.

I'll be at a beach around 18:30 tomorrow if you fancy joining me. Visibility will be rubbish but I have a set of gloves and fins to try.

Check your PM's for my contact details.

I'm liaising with a local pool for lane hire and a training session but it is slow going. At this rate hopefully something will be in place for when the nights draw in. With the help of FreeDive UK I've produced the required risk assessment and we'll see how it goes. It would be nice to just have somewhere to practice fin technique.

I would like to say a big thank you to "Caveraver" and "diddavetellyou" for keeping this thread going, as unfortunately I have been swamped with uni work so kept forgetting to check the forums. diddavetellyou do you think that the quarry may be warm enough next week sometime? (due to our consistent good weather). If not do any of you guys want to do a shore dive at babbacombe? or another south devon bay? (as the visibility should be better and it is good finning training until deeper water warms up).

Cheers guys

hi Browner,

didn't think i was doing much to be honest but thanks.

i'm revising hard for my last exam at the moment then i have work at festivals in the South-East of England for most the summer; so i wont be back in Cornwall much.

the boss has said that he is happy for you to go in the lake so long as the site is open so you can get together when I'm not there if you want.

in this weather it will have warmed up the first few feet of water (to maybe 13'C) but you will want your winter suit as the thermocline at the end of last summer was still 8'C at 8m

i'll give the boss a ring and check out the details again as soon as i have half a day to think

Cheers diddavetellyou, if you could post the contact details on this thread later in the summer we can contact you boss and ask him nicely for us to dive during opening times
Ah it's a shame that you won't be in the southwest this summer, if you for some reason though just let us know and I would be happy to dive buddy you.

Have a good summer.

Ditto on the quarry dives.

I'm going to check out a couple of other quarry places on Bodmin Moor above Liskeard. I'll keep you posted.

Any news?/updates? If in September we booked a pool once a week and arranged to meet around Plymouth once a weekend for a freedive, who would be interested in starting a small club? Freedive UK allow people to form small Freedive UK clubs so we may get their support, I do not know what the requirements are though to start a club like that...?anyone interested?

Happy Diving

I'm on holiday for a week or so but on my return I shall be doing a trial session arranged with a local pool in Plymouth. Initially there are only two of us but if it works out we could definitely expand it. I would suggest that all participants read and sign the risk assessment, sign some kind of 'I do this at my own risk' document and are insured with the BFA.

I'd be up for any regular meet.

Hi,
I have just spotted this post and would be interested in joining you for a free-dive and spearfishing club. I have been spearfishing at bovisands the last few days without a wet-suit as i have out grown it. The water wasn't that bad ( Will be picking a new one up asap ).
I may have a go-pro i can borrow from a friend as well.
When are you doing a trail session?
Thanks Pete.

I'll post on this thread when we get the pool sessions up and running properly. To start with I'm going to break the swimming pool in gently. It's taken months to get this far with the permissions. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted as soon as we have a firm arrangement.

As for diving off Bovisand without a wetsuit, all I can say is that the sea must have warmed up massively in the last few weeks since I've been away! Credit to you.

Did the first pool session yesterday and it went well. Some static dives, fin training, rescue practice and easy dynamic. Anyone else fancy a go?<br />

Searching for a Freediving buddy in Plymouth

Hello there,
I'm currently living in Plymouth and am searching for someone to dive with. If anyone is interested please contact me.
Regards,
Nick

Nick - I too am in Plymouth and would be well up for meeting up. I've been after someone to dive with for months. It's pretty windy tomorrow but I'm free most Friday afternoons or weekends.

Browner - I'll make enquiries as to what dates and times are available for the pool. Membership of the British Freediving Association will be a requirement. It's only £20 and then you're fully insured for 3rd party liability which keeps the pool people happy.

Hey caveraver, I have BFA membership but my card still hasn't arrived (1 month ago), has yours? Yeh I am eager for a bit of training, did my 3* this summer so aiming for the 4* next For both you and Nick I should be about Sunday afternoon and most of next week really if you fancy a dive...

Hi,

I have a 3* AIDA qualification and I am super keen to meet freedivers to do some training in the Plymouth area. Do you meet in one of the local swimming pool? Would it be possible to join you?

Thanks
Fanny

Hey Fanny,

The swimming pool stuff still hasn't been sorted, but it's great that you are keen! If you pm your contacts or something I would be happy to have a buddy to freedive with in the sea, or atleast when the swells settle down.

Cheers,

Lewis
