My snorkelling partner is thinking of getting a pneumatic as his first speargun (for the UK). He is big guy and is easily able to load my 90cm railgun. Is this a reasonable choice? If so, what make, model and size would you recommend?

I don't fully understand his reason for wanting a pneumatic. I think it is partly because he has seen that a short gun would often be more practical around the reefs that we dive and also I think he believes they are more powerful than equivalent sized rubber guns. I think there are other reasons too related to his work (which are not relevant here.) [I personally think rubber band powered guns are beautifully simple -- but to each his own].

Cost is important. Is this one any good?: http://www.scubastore.com/shop.asp?id_familia=6&id_subfamilia=21

Try contacting Clive (UKSpearo) He uses a short pneumatic and seems to like it from what Ive read :)

hi,
if cost is important, for reef and cave hunting at a reasonable price you could choose beetween an Omer Tempest 70cm, a Sporasub Stealth 85cm, a cressi sl 70 cm. All the three are beetween a price 0f 70-90 euro (italian price).
I would pick a Stealth: it's the only one of the three available in the intemediate size of 85cm that fits both for cave and open water shooting (the tempest passes from 70 to very long 130, the cressi from 70 to 100). Stealth has mimetic color, a slim 11mm inner barrell for 7mm shafts, good accuracy.
Others I have used personally, and found good, are sporasub rafal and mares sten (both less accurate), cyrano (very expensive) and tigullio (maybe hard to find in the uk). bye

HI Mr X, I have a very short compressed air gun, Beuchat 60 with a tritand on. I only ever use it for very very dirty water as it's the shortest gun I have. It's great for flaties over the sand or Bass and mullet in holes and wrecks. But, I never use it other wise, I have 4 rubber Beuchats I use. My 75 is the one I use most. In fact I havn't used my compressed air gun since about March. I would advise getting a rubber gun, so simple to use, fast accurate easy to maintain and cheap to fix ... not that there's much to go wrong. Hope that helps. Clive.
