Help Please....

I'm looking to change from band guns to a pneumatics. I dont have any particular reason other than wanting a change....

I have basically decided to get one gun with the same range/power as my 90cm band gun ...... and .......I'm also thinking of getting somthing really short maybe 40cm that i'll use mainly for gullies holes and when im pulling myself through kelp beds in shallow water.

Lot of manufactures seem to make pneu. guns but they all look very similar.... is there a huge difference in quality, reliability and power between products?

I have read lots of good things about the maorsub mamba 90cm and think its a good choice as the long gun...... but is there a real alternative?

What would people recommend as a short gun????

Thanks in advance

Ben, Maorasub can supply you a mamba kitted gun from various manufacturers, I have two 90s both are Omer & I have a asso 115 as well.
The mamba 90 is in fact only as long as a 75 band gun but about twice as powerful!
A standard air gun will work ok but in my opinion you will really benefit from a mamba kit (or one of the other dry barrel systems) The asso 115 is in a different league, more difficult to load, more difficult to maneuver but with power to blow fish out the water!
I dont think much of the low powered short air guns so I will let someone else advise you on that.
The bottom line is a mamba 90 is more than powerful for our waters, very quite & smooth to fire but it will take a few shots to get your eye in if you are used to the jerky firing cycle of a band gun.

Ben, I use 40cm Mares pneumatic as back up to my main gun and I can honestly say that I have shot more fish with this gun than all of my other guns combined. The 40 cm gun works very well in confined places when the fish are holed up, especially if you use a multi prong spearhead. We refer to this type of head as a three prong in Hawaii; the ones that I use have four prongs.

If you only want to carry one gun when your diving I would suggest 85 cm length pneumatic to replace the 90 cm band gun. You will have the same or greater range and you can maneuver the gun faster than you 90 cm band gun.

I agree with Foxfish on his advice on getting a dry barrel kit for you longer pneumatic, you will get same power with way less loading effort with a dry barrel kit because the gun will not have to be pressurized as much as a wet barrel gun. However, I would not spend the extra money to convert a 40 cm gun because it is very easy to load even a maximum pressure.
