For those pneumatic bluewater hunters, you may like to see what I have been using sucessfully for over 25 years. The line is mono 600 lb test and the balls are polypropylene from Mc Master/Carr drilled to just over the mono diameter except the last ball that is countersunk to accept the speartip. I use this in conjuction with a folding stock over the outer barrel located about halfway along the length, just enough to keep my face away from the front of the spear.
When not in use I just tuck the assembly away in my suit or belt.
Because the loading is hand over hand a foot or so at a time, there is not much chance of the shaft bending during loading.
It's also great practice for pulling an anchor chain or vice versa.
Because the only difference in guns is the length of the inner/outer barrels, (and of course the shaft) the possibilities for longer guns open significantly.
