Pole spear no float line

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.

Hey Guys,

Ive been using a polespear for a while but usually by myself or with a buddy with a speargun+reel.

Now ive got 1 or 2 other buddies and we all use pole spears, and float lines on all of them is too much of a hazard and mess.

I dive in clear water so dropping the spear won't be any trouble, but my question is how likely is it for a fish to swim away with me if i dont use a float line? Is there any alternative to a float line...like a wirst band, etc.?

Using a wrist band is just asking for trouble. If you get it caught under a ledge or in a cave you could be in real trouble. You might never get back to the surface for that next breath.

If you don't want to use a float line, just hold on to the band after firing. That's what I do, as well as most other pole spear users. The only time I have used a float line is when I was hunting for large pacific halibut, which can weigh several hundred kilos (Never found one yet, maybe luckily)
 
Use the reel attached to your arm if u haven't found the solution.
