Pole spear vs. Hawaiian sling

What's the difference? I thought they were the same thing. I'm thinking of the type with the band on one end and usually fiberglass.
 
The kind with the rubber sling attached to the rear end is the pole spear.

Hawaiian slings are more like a sling shot. They use a tube or pipe with the rubber slings attached and some sort of wishbone or pocket in the rear of the sling. The shaft is inserted through the tube and pulled back with the slings, then released. It is not tethered to anything.
